Requirements
  • High school education and 4-6 years of experience as a building heating, ventilating, cooling, and controls mechanic, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and write the English language.
  • Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Certification is required.
  • Must adhere to all University, Departmental, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety policies, practices, and requirements as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Install, test, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of air conditioning, heating, ventilating, cooling, filtration, humidifying, controls, and refrigeration systems.
  • Maintain air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including absorption, centrifugal, and compressor units.
  • Perform required preventive maintenance on installed equipment.
  • Inspect and examine system components to detect mechanical or electrical failures; change filters, clean units, and perform other maintenance.
  • Disassemble related equipment to assess condition and make necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Check electrical, electronic, and pneumatic controls for air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and make necessary adjustments, repairs, or replacements.
  • Pump down and charge units with appropriate refrigerants.
  • Install equipment according to engineer-provided blueprints, sketches, specifications, and manufacturers' recommendations.
  • Test and balance air and chilled-water and hot-water systems.
  • Keep records and prepare reports of daily work, emergency and service calls investigated, service rendered, troubleshooting results, and the general condition of equipment and systems; make recommendations for modification.
  • Review controls and control systems for proper operation, sequencing, and optimum efficiency; recommend and perform changes to achieve optimum operation.
  • Perform other related duties of similar complexity, including maintaining tools.
  • May guide, direct, and train lower-classified trades personnel.
