Requirements
  • A current State of Wisconsin teaching license and certification, with one year of experience working with children or adolescents who have exceptional educational needs or mental health issues.
  • Knowledge of behavioral symptoms, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, and strategies and techniques for conducting groups and one-to-one situations with patients.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods, standards, and trends in education and mental health.
  • Current Rogers Behavioral Health certification for proper care of patients with behavioral issues, with annual recertification.
  • American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification within thirty days of hire, with biannual recertification.
  • Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention within sixty days of hire or transfer, with annual recertification.
  • Ongoing continuing education requirements per Rogers Behavioral Health annual competencies.
Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight and coordination between all child and adolescent inpatient units related to treatment planning, curriculum development, classroom and assignment activities, and community marketing outreach.
  • Review and interpret education testing and assessment results concerning patients’ academic strengths, weaknesses, age-specific needs, and special needs.
  • Collect additional information necessary to provide patient care.
  • Provide treatment planning appropriate to the age of the patient population served.
  • Select educational materials designed to meet students’ age-specific educational needs.
  • Recommend ongoing programmatic changes based on patients’ identified needs.
  • Implement and enforce effective behavior management techniques for the classroom setting.
  • Develop and deliver supplemental educational services identified through assessments.
  • Identify necessary revisions to assessment tools and processes, initiate processes to implement revisions, and communicate this information to staff as needed.
  • Conduct classes for patients as needed.
  • Communicate with hospital staff, educational consultants, referral contacts, schools, and families about the educational program.
  • Oversee the provision of current and necessary information to coordinate patients’ return to the school setting, and update forms and tools for sharing information with schools.
  • Maintain contact with interdisciplinary team members throughout each patient’s hospitalization to support coworkers and patients.
  • Remain current on federal and state laws pertaining to special education.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members using problem-solving skills and abilities.
  • Comply with hospital employee health and safety policies.
  • Attend required in-service programs as scheduled.
  • Perform duties assigned by the Medical Director, Clinical Services Manager, and current needs of the hospital.
  • Communicate goals to fellow staff members.
  • Maintain department policies and procedures.
  • Include requirements and guidelines from external agencies, including the Joint Commission and the State of Wisconsin.
  • Maintain or communicate the appropriate function backlog at a set time.
  • Educate new staff regarding regulations or requirements for functions related to their areas or departments, as directed.
  • Provide acceptance and training for student interns in the department, as directed.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Joint Commission and other regulatory agency compliance regulations.
  • Apply standards relevant to the department through ongoing learning.
  • Educate other disciplines regarding Education Therapy Services regulations and keep inpatient, residential, and partial hospitalization programs up to date on current federal and state education laws.
  • Participate in hospital committees, performance improvement team meetings, and team projects, as directed.
  • Participate in the performance improvement program by understanding the process, applying the performance improvement model to department activities, and participating in or creating performance improvement teams.
  • Work with units to update schedules, parent packets, and expectations for classroom school times.
  • Communicate with individuals in a positive and professional manner.
  • Resolve individual issues with peers in a positive, calm, solution-focused manner and use unit managers to help resolve issues and problem-solve.
  • Communicate concerns and provide solutions.
  • Attend seminars, educational classes, community workshops, support groups, and seminars related to education or mental health to promote professional growth and support community outreach.
  • Use marketing techniques and strategies to build relationships with current and future referral resources.
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward parties outside the hospital, including provider relations representatives, managed care contractors, visitors, and vendors.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures, including human resources, infection control, and employee health policies and programs.
  • Project a professional image by wearing appropriate professional attire.
