The company earns revenue by charging approved rates set by state regulators for its utility services, with a focus on safe and reliable energy delivery to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Its approach centers on maintained utility infrastructure and regulated pricing, differentiating it from competitive energy suppliers by operating as a regulated, monopoly-style service provider in its service areas. The company's goal is to provide dependable energy delivery while meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring steady, predictable utility earnings through approved rate structures.

Our View: Solar powered hydrogen plant a win for region

Our view: solar powered hydrogen plant a win for region. * 14 hrs ago Thumbs up to Centerpoint Energy and community partners public and private for boosting the idea of building a solar energy-powered hydrogen plant in Mankato that could help mix renewable energy into the local natural gas pipeline. It will be the first such plant in the state for Centerpoint that runs on solar power. Another hydrogen conversion project has been operating in Minneapolis since June 2022 using traditional electrical energy. The $7.4 million Mankato project makes sense as it can be developed on land Centerpoint already owns on North Riverfront Drive to house the 1 megawatt solar array. An electrolyzer will convert water into its base elements and be a 5% blend of hydrogen gas into the natural gas supply in the area. The innovative plant is another piece, albeit small, of providing the local grid with energy that can be clean and relatively cheap. The hydrogen will only replace about 5% of the natural gas but could be expanded to a 20% blend. There will also be a possibility to store the hydrogen energy and make it accessible via portable tanks that could be used at larger Mankato industrial users of natural gas. On cloudy days or at night, the hydrogen plant will rely on traditional electricity from the grid. The city of Mankato recently approved the project and may benefit itself for use of the energy for its buildings. The lifetime reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would be similar to taking 6,000 cars off the road for one year. The city has begun the permitting process with completion of the project expected at the end of 2027. Its also fits in with a recently passed Minnesota law that encourages such innovative carbon reduction projects. The innovation projects are already being financed by a $1.50 charge on energy bills and will also likely receive some federal tax credits to help finance the project. Mankato was chosen due to the company's long history in the area and the presence of large industrial users of natural gas. The project is a win-win for Mankato-area consumers and businesses and will highlight the region as one at the forefront of this carbon-reducing technology. React to this story: (0 Ratings)

CenterPoint launching program to cut energy costs for local organizations

CenterPoint launching program to cut energy costs for local organizations. Published: Feb. 27, 2026 at 1:39 PM PST | Updated: Feb. 27, 2026 at 3:50 PM PST EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - CenterPoint Energy is launching three new initiatives for local groups and businesses to cut energy costs. The programs are called Optimize for Good, Optimize for Local and Optimize for Growth. Each one offers funding if certain energy efficient improvements are made. This includes new lighting, HVAC systems or building insulation. Officials say there many ways organizations can qualify. "They need to own or lease their facility and we want them to be local, headquartered here," says Amanda Schmitt with CenterPoint. "Then for our small businesses, we're targeting that segment that's under 10 million in revenue or under 100 employees. So really our local businesses that are investing here, headquartered here - your Main Street, your home grown businesses here." Officials also say they began to look at implementing these changes after speaking with local officials. "We heard from Mayor Terry here locally, we heard from the Mount Vernon Mayor, from the Rockport mayor, and a number of other local officials about the segments of our region that need assistance," says Mike Roeder with CenterPoint. "Home repair and care was step one and this is step two. We have some additional pieces of this we'll roll out later this year." They say the programs will have a staggered released. CenterPoint officials say they hope to launch Optimize for Local next month and have the other programs ready in the following months. You can learn about each of these programs below. * Optimize for Good: Helping nonprofits reinvest in their communities Optimize for Good will help southwestern Indiana nonprofits lower facility energy costs. Each participating organization will receive a professional facility assessment with improvement recommendations and will be eligible for up to $25,000 in matching grant funding to implement a priority project - such as upgrading lighting, HVAC systems or building insulation. By reducing energy expenses, nonprofits can redirect limited dollars toward the community missions they serve. * Optimize for Local: Lowering energy usage and costs for neighborhood businesses Optimize for Local will help locally owned independent restaurants and retailers make energy efficiency upgrades - such as improved HVAC, refrigeration or lighting - with up to $25,000 each in matching grant funding. The program supports the neighborhood businesses customers see and visit every day across southwestern Indiana. * Optimize for Growth: Strengthening local industry and regional growth Optimize for Growth will help small industrial businesses - including small manufacturers, processors and fabricators - complete energy efficiency improvements with up to $25,000 in matching grant funding. Supporting these businesses helps strengthen the region's economic base and the ability of the businesses to scale and compete. Officials also provided an update on their home repair program to help customers with utility costs. "Community One's our partner here and they're getting out to these just as quickly as they can. I know we just yesterday on some of our social platforms put one story out from a customer, so we're gonna try to put more information out about customers who are receiving that kind of support." Officials say they have already received more than 850 applicants and are in the process of serving 36 of those applicants. Program details, eligibility and application information are available at CenterPointEnergy.com/Optimize.
