Requirements
  • Possesses a valid driver's license.
  • Possesses or is able to obtain through reciprocity a valid State of Hawaii Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License.
  • Understands wastewater treatment processes including MBBR, MBR, SBR, extended aeration, anaerobic and aerobic digestion, bio-towers, activated sludge, clarifiers, rotating biological contactors, and trickling filters.
  • Possesses knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance, collection systems, and reuse-water treatment and disposal at the level expected of a State of Hawaii Grade IV WWTP Operator.
  • Possesses thorough operating knowledge of at least two specified treatment processes, including digestion, thickening, chemical and biological treatment, chemical recovery, carbon regeneration, on-site disinfectant generation, oxidation ditch, ultraviolet disinfection, odor scrubbing, chlorination and dechlorination, membrane and sand filtration, or activated sludge.
  • Has the ability to prepare basic correspondence and simple reports in Microsoft Word.
  • Has the ability to use Microsoft Excel to create tables and simple displays of information.
  • Has the ability to operate and maintain electrical controls and equipment, diagnose plant equipment, and supervise correction of equipment issues.
  • Has the ability to use the company's computerized maintenance software.
  • Has the ability to review equipment operational reports and laboratory analyses of wastewater and instruct others in equipment-related operating practices and procedures.
  • Effectively interprets and communicates written and verbal opinions and analyses of collected information.
  • Resolves conflicts involving employees, customers or clients, the public, legal entities, or governmental authorities.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and prepares correspondence, reports, articles, and other documentation.
  • Meets the health and physical condition standards necessary to perform the duties.
  • Can work in hazardous, unsanitary, and unpleasant conditions.
  • Can work shift, weekend, and holiday schedules.
  • Can perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds and other manual work under adverse conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Ensures the safe, efficient, and economical operation of equipment in wastewater treatment plants to optimize processes and protect public health.
  • Performs maintenance and upkeep of equipment and operating devices.
  • Performs physical and chemical tests.
  • Provides leadership to WWTP Operators and exercises leadership authority over them.
  • Interprets data and makes recommendations to improve plant equipment and processes.
  • Operates and maintains sewer pump stations.
  • Troubleshoots plant equipment.
  • Maintains and updates plant records.
  • Prepares operational reports.
  • Organizes projects or the work of others.
  • Manages assigned duties and responsibilities on a fixed schedule, independently prioritizing work when required.
  • Applies problem-solving skills.
  • Considers the impact of work products on other employees in the work process.
  • Follows applicable safety rules and practices.
  • Selects from established alternatives to modify approaches in response to encountered situations.
