Kalshi operates a regulated exchange where traders can speculate on the outcomes of various events through a new type of financial instrument called 'event contracts.' These contracts allow investors to bet on whether specific future events will happen, such as changes in Covid-19 statistics or legislative decisions in Congress. The platform expands the traditional futures market by addressing unique economic risks that are not typically covered by standard commodity derivatives. Kalshi caters to both individual investors and institutional traders, providing them with opportunities to hedge against or speculate on significant events. The company earns revenue by charging transaction fees on trades made on its platform. Kalshi stands out from its competitors by being the first exchange in the U.S. to receive regulatory approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for this type of trading.
