Target surges 62% while Walmart drops 7% — here's which Dividend King to buy

Target's stock has surged 62% this year through 20 August, whilst Walmart's shares fell 7%, marking a dramatic reversal in their performance trajectories. Walmart reported fiscal second-quarter same-store sales growth of 2.6%, excluding petrol, with revenue rising 5.1% and operating income up 17.4%. The retailer's low-price strategy continues attracting customers during inflationary times, with higher traffic contributing 1.5 percentage points to sales growth. The company maintains its Dividend King status, having raised payments for 53 consecutive years. However, its 1% dividend yield trails the S&P 500's 1.1%. Target has acknowledged struggling with its merchandise strategy, admitting its once-differentiated product offerings no longer resonate with consumers.

Walmart and Target receive $4B in tariff refunds as White House threatens to reclaim funds

Major US retailers are receiving billions in tariff refunds after the Supreme Court ruled certain duties were illegally imposed. Walmart is getting approximately $3 billion and Target $1 billion, with over 40 S&P 500 companies expecting $9.6 billion in total refunds. The refunds stem from tariffs paid on imported goods before the court ruling. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticised the process as a "corporate bonanza," stating the administration has devised a legal workaround to reclaim tariff income. US Customs and Border Protection has issued $100 billion in refunds according to court filings. Target and Walmart executives said they're using the funds to reduce prices on thousands of items, including ground beef and school supplies. Target lowered prices on 10,000 items over the past year.

Walmart to roll out Apple Pay, other contactless payment options, at all US stores from Aug 24.

Walmart to roll out Apple Pay, other contactless payment options, at all US stores from Aug 24. Published 22 Aug 2026, 10:44 PM IST Ending a long-standing holdout, Walmart announced on Friday that it will roll out widespread contactless payment options - most notably Apple Pay - across its operations. This rollout is part of the world's largest retailer's initiative to streamline the shopping experience and increase convenience for consumers, Bloomberg reported. The new payment methods will be integrated across all of Walmart's physical stores by the end of the year, as well as on its websites and mobile applications. Shift from proprietary systems. For years, Walmart has been one of the most prominent retail holdouts resisting third-party contactless payments. Previously, the only way shoppers could use contactless checkout at Walmart was through the retailer's own proprietary system, Walmart Pay, which required using the Walmart app. As "tap-to-pay" via phones or enabled credit cards became ubiquitous across the retail landscape, Walmart's refusal to accept Apple Pay caused noticeable frustration among its customers. By allowing customers to tap their devices or cards at electronic terminals, Walmart aims to significantly reduce checkout times. Rollout timeline. Bloomberg said the integration of the new payment systems will happen in phases. The initial rollout will begin at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations on Monday, August 24. The new contactless payment options, including Apple Pay, will be available at all stores by the end of the year and at gas stations by mid next year. By mid-next year, Bloomberg said, the payment options will expand to include Walmart-operated gas stations. The announcement arrives on the heels of a challenging quarter for the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer. On Thursday, Walmart reported a rare earnings miss, marking its slowest US comparable sales growth in over six years. The company attributed this sluggish performance primarily to pricing pressures within its pharmacy division. In response to changing consumer habits, Walmart has spent recent years heavily expanding its e-commerce footprint and investing in faster delivery networks to remain competitive and appeal to shoppers prioritising convenience. Walmart's chief communications executive to leave. Walmart's head of communications is stepping down early next year, Bloomberg said, adding that the retailer will look for a replacement externally. Chief Communications Officer Allyson Park, who has been at Walmart for more than three years, will transition to an advisory role starting 1 September, according to a memo viewed by Bloomberg News. She'll depart the company on 1 February. Park, who has also worked at Yum! Brands Inc. and Mars Inc, integrated the communications department more effectively with other divisions, according to the memo. During her tenure, Walmart has invested in new hires for the team and applied AI more frequently. She also led the company's communications strategy during last year's transition of the chief executive officer, when John Furner replaced Doug McMillon.

Why Walmart's Apple Pay and Google Pay rollout matters now.

Why Walmart's Apple Pay and Google Pay rollout matters now. Walmart adds Apple Pay and Google Pay to its stores, a move that could change the retail payments landscape. Find out why this matters and what it means for... Aug 22, 2026 - 10:29 Why is Walmart, one of the world's largest retailers, finally embracing Apple Pay and Google Pay? The answer lies in the company's efforts to stay competitive in a rapidly changing retail landscape. After years of resistance, Walmart is now rolling out support for the two popular mobile payment services to its stores, starting August 24th. Walmart's decision to add Apple Pay and Google Pay is likely driven by the growing demand for mobile payments among consumers. With more and more people using their smartphones to make payments, Walmart recognized the need to adapt to this shift in consumer behavior. The company's previous resistance to Apple Pay and Google Pay was seen as a major drawback, and the rollout of these services is expected to improve the shopping experience for Walmart customers. The introduction of Apple Pay and Google Pay at Walmart stores will provide consumers with more payment options, making it easier and more convenient for them to make purchases. With the tap-to-pay capability, customers will no longer need to dig out their wallets or wait in line to make a payment. This is expected to reduce wait times and improve the overall shopping experience. Walmart's adoption of Apple Pay and Google Pay is a significant win for the payments industry, which has been pushing for wider acceptance of mobile payments. This move is expected to drive further adoption of mobile payments among other retailers, and could potentially disrupt the traditional payment landscape. As more retailers begin to accept mobile payments, Parrotainment can expect to see a shift away from traditional payment methods like cash and credit cards. Only time will tell if Walmart's decision to add Apple Pay and Google Pay will pay off, but the signs are promising. By embracing mobile payments, Walmart is positioning itself for success in a rapidly changing retail environment. As consumers become increasingly reliant on their smartphones, retailers that adapt to this shift will be better equipped to meet their needs and stay competitive. As Walmart continues to roll out Apple Pay and Google Pay to its stores, Parrotainment can expect to see further innovation in the mobile payments space. The company may explore other mobile payment options, such as Samsung Pay or Facebook Pay, and could potentially develop its own mobile payment service. One thing is certain, however: the retail payments landscape will continue to evolve, and Walmart is now well-positioned to adapt to these changes. Walmart's adoption of Apple Pay and Google Pay marks a significant shift in the retail payments landscape. But what does this mean for the future of mobile payments, and how will other retailers respond to this change? Parrotainment is watching this story develop - check back for updates. Follow the gist
