- Inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Communicate with VDOT support staff and external support staff, assist in managing public relations for projects, respond to public concerns, and coordinate notifications about traffic changes and project phase start and finish.
- Address landowner, business owner and traveling public concerns regarding projects and assist with lane closure notification coordination.
- Work with contractors to resolve issues.
- Ensure construction activities comply with contracts, plans, environmental requirements, erosion and sediment controls, safety and traffic controls, EEO and DBE guidelines, regulations, and permits.
- Ensure project compliance and quality requirements are met, document contractor non-compliance and resolutions, and ensure materials are tested, approved, and documented before use and payment.
- Oversee or perform materials testing.
- Track and maintain materials documentation, daily work reports, diaries, project files, jobsite photos, communications, meetings, contractor activities, and as-built drawings.
- Assist with quarterly contractor performance evaluations and project closeout.
- Monitor assigned quality-control tasks and project schedules for contract compliance.
- Determine required support equipment, obtain it, and return it in proper condition.
- Maintain assigned work areas in a clean and usable condition.
- Serve as Project Inspector for less complex contracts when assigned, working closely with the Construction Manager.
- Train and oversee the work of other inspectors and trainees assigned to a project when assigned.
- Ensure work zones are properly established and maintained.
- Ensure project employees and equipment comply with safety practices and directives.
- Monitor erosion and sediment control measures for compliance and maintenance.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment and practice safe driving while maintaining a clean vehicle.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Drafting, or a related field.
- American Concrete Institute Concrete Field Level I or WACEL Concrete I Certification.
- Asphalt Field Level I.
- Asphalt Field Level II.
- CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens Combined Course.
- Fall protection and confined space training.
- DEQ Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control certification.
- DEQ Inspector for Storm Water Management certification.
- Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management, or materials inspection.
- Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm.
- Guard Rail Installer Training.
- Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety.
- Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards, and terminology.
- Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects.
