Verizon deploys Google's Gemini AI across customer service to cut costs and boost retention

Verizon is partnering with Google Cloud to deploy Gemini Enterprise AI across customer service, network operations, marketing and employee workflows. The technology already handles most of Verizon's inbound consumer calls and chats monthly, allowing human representatives to focus on complex issues. Verizon plans to use Gemini Enterprise to coordinate AI agents across core business functions. The company's second-quarter mobility and broadband service revenue rose 2.8% to roughly $23.4 billion, whilst adjusted EBITDA increased 7.2% to a record $13.7 billion. Verizon expects mobility and broadband service revenue growth to accelerate towards approximately 4% in the fourth quarter. The company raised 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $4.99 to $5.04. For Alphabet, Verizon provides a large-scale proof point that Gemini Enterprise can move into mission-critical corporate workflows.

Verizon drops fees, adds AI perks and yearly upgrades with new Google Pixel 11 plans

Verizon Communications has launched new Simplicity and Simplicity Pro wireless plans alongside an exclusive Google Pixel 11 lineup. The plans bundle Google AI features with flexible yearly device upgrade options and remove activation and upgrade fees. The telecom company, valued at approximately $205.5 billion, is using the Pixel 11 collaboration to integrate AI-driven services into its core connectivity business. The strategy aims to convert network investment into stickier customer relationships through segmented plans and bundled services. Analysts view the launch as supporting Verizon's convergence strategy, offering differentiation against competitors AT&T and T-Mobile. However, concerns remain about the promotion-heavy structure and whether wireless growth will depend on deeper discounts. The move does not address ongoing worries about Verizon's high debt and capital intensity.

AT&T may recover $57M fine as Verizon's Supreme Court challenge fails

The US Supreme Court denied Verizon's petition to recover $47 million paid to the Federal Communications Commission for selling customer location data, ending the carrier's legal challenge. AT&T remains in a stronger position to recover its $57 million fine due to different procedural routing through the Fifth Circuit. Between 2014 and 2019, both carriers sold real-time GPS location data for over 140 million subscribers to aggregators, who resold access with minimal oversight. The FCC fined four carriers $196 million total in April 2024. Verizon exhausted its legal options after the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that carriers weren't denied jury trials because they could have refused payment. AT&T's case was sent back to the Fifth Circuit, where its attorneys argue the company was misled into paying and that the location data wasn't covered by FCC authority.

Supreme Court rejects Verizon bid for $47M refund of FCC fine over location data sales

The Supreme Court rejected Verizon's petition for a $47 million refund of a Federal Communications Commission fine, issued without explanation. The fine was part of $196 million in penalties levied against Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in 2024 for selling customers' real-time location data without consent to data aggregators. Verizon claims it was misled into paying and now seeks another chance to challenge the fine's legal basis. The company argues it alone has no path to appeal, while AT&T and T-Mobile continue challenging similar fines. The carriers sold device-location information that was resold to other firms, including Securus Technologies, which allowed unauthorised law enforcement access. Despite discontinuing these programmes, carriers maintain the fines were illegal, arguing the privacy law covers only call-location data, not device-location data.

Verizon and Lockheed Martin pilot AI and 5G airspace monitoring for drones

Verizon Communications and Lockheed Martin are collaborating on NetSense Airspace Awareness-as-a-Service, combining AI and 5G technology for unmanned aircraft systems detection and critical infrastructure protection. The partners are working with additional technology providers to connect sensor data over Verizon's 5G network for real-time monitoring of drone activity. The initiative includes planned pilot deployments and potential future commercialisation targeting enterprise and government customers. The collaboration aligns with Verizon's strategy to monetise its 5G network through higher-value, security-focused enterprise applications. Investors will be watching whether the NetSense pilots convert into paying deployments around late 2026 to 2027, and whether Verizon begins highlighting airspace monitoring wins within its enterprise and private network sales.
