Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics and at least eight years of relevant experience, or an MS degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics and at least five years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active Department of War security clearance.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site five days per week at an SEI office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or Arlington, Virginia.
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one compiled language, specifically C, C++, or Java, with experience using REST or GraphQL application programming interfaces and containerization.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning theory, including supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, and evaluation metrics.
  • Hands-on experience fine-tuning large language models and using Hugging Face Transformers, LangChain, or comparable agent tools.
  • Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, vector stores, and dense or sparse retrievers.
  • Experience applying parameter-efficient fine-tuning and LoRA methods, including adapters, to large models.
  • Understanding of Model Context protocols for managing model state across multi-turn interactions.
  • Experience building evaluation frameworks, benchmarks, or data quality pipelines.
  • Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and fine-tune a variety of artificial intelligence models.
  • Design autonomous agents and multi-step pipelines using LangChain, ReAct, tool-calling, or custom orchestration, and employ the Model Context protocol to manage stateful interactions.
  • Build retrieval-augmented generation pipelines that combine external knowledge bases with large language models to improve factual accuracy for warfighting applications.
  • Implement end-to-end data pipelines, extract-transform-load processes, and back-end services using Python, C, C++, or Java that feed data to models.
  • Create continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines for model training, validation, containerized deployment using Docker and Kubernetes, and security scanning; maintain model registries, monitoring, and version control of context protocols.
  • Produce rapid prototypes, run benchmarks, and conduct robustness and adversarial testing in realistic environments.
  • Work closely with senior machine learning engineers, software developers, and government customers; mentor junior staff and contribute to design reviews and documentation.
  • Stay current with emerging large language model architectures, agentic paradigms, parameter-efficient fine-tuning and LoRA methods, and artificial intelligence safety techniques, and translate new research into operational capabilities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of data-pipeline tools such as Airflow, Prefect, or Ray.
  • Awareness of DevSecOps practices, including continuous integration and continuous delivery, GitOps, container security scanning, and model-registry concepts.
  • Experience deploying large language model application programming interfaces such as FastAPI and gRPC at scale, including latency and load balancing.
  • Experience building multi-tool agents, planner-executor loops, or tool-calling pipelines for complex decision-making.
  • Experience conducting adversarial testing, implementing input sanitization, and contributing to artificial intelligence safety research.
  • Experience utilizing GPU or TPU resources, mixed-precision training, and distributed training frameworks such as DeepSpeed or ZeRO.
  • Prior work on defense, intelligence, or government-focused artificial intelligence projects and familiarity with Department of War acquisition or compliance processes.
  • Experience contributing to open-source artificial intelligence and machine learning libraries, agentic frameworks, or context-protocol implementations.
