Requirements
  • One year of experience in pediatric echocardiography.
  • Graduation from an education program approved by the credentialing body for a required credential.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, or instructor status.
  • One of the following certifications: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer–Adult Echocardiography, Registered Vascular Technologist, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer–Pediatric Echocardiography, Registered Cardiac Sonographer, or Registered Vascular Specialist.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, particularly those affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Basic computer knowledge and ability to operate hospital, radiology, cardiology information systems, and office software.
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision, organize workflow, and participate in problem solving.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine to complex pediatric echocardiograms, including transthoracic, transesophageal, plain stress, dobutamine stress, bubble, contrast, and advanced four-dimensional imaging studies for inpatient and outpatient patients.
  • Independently evaluate patients for complex congenital or structural heart defects that may require surgical reconstruction, repair, or replacement.
  • Locate, evaluate, and record pertinent anatomical, pathological, and functional data using multiple ultrasound systems.
  • Transmit examinations to compatible Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine storage applications and process preliminary technical data in the designated interpreting system.
  • Communicate significant findings to the attending reading physician.
  • Remain available for on-call coverage.
  • Perform cardiac echo studies and ensure precise, accurate data transmission for physician completion.
  • Provide physical care and explain examination purposes and techniques to inpatient and outpatient patients.
  • Assist physicians and healthcare team members during cardiac echo studies, including patient preparation and proper sterile techniques.
  • Accurately identify cardiac structures and calculate valve area, pressure gradients, and ejection fraction.
  • Identify abnormal findings, take corrective action, and communicate findings to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain sterile and aseptic techniques and comply with infection-control, job, department, and hospital safety standards.
  • Verify patient-care equipment quality control and safe working order, report malfunctions, perform preventive maintenance, and request service when needed.
  • Document patient procedures accurately and completely and enter charges when applicable.
  • Manage time and daily priorities effectively while assisting coworkers as needed.
  • Participate in departmental projects and shared-governance activities focused on innovation, efficiency, and patient-care improvement.
  • Identify professional-development needs and complete and update the My Development Plan.
