Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in education or a related field. If the degree is not in a related field, a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, such as CELTA or an equivalent, is required.
  • Current Colorado Department of Education Adult Basic Education Authorization or receipt of certification within two years; current authorization is preferred.
  • At least two to three years of experience working with adult learners.
  • Knowledge and practical application of current English as a Second Language and adult education theory.
  • Ability to create presentations.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining quality service standards.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Ability to lift or carry 20 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct classroom instruction for adults using appropriate English as a Second Language curriculum, teaching methods, and materials.
  • Teach classes at off-site locations in the greater Denver metropolitan area.
  • Foster an encouraging and supportive learning environment by responding to students' instructional needs and concerns.
  • Use student-centric methodologies and approaches and multiple teaching styles.
  • Demonstrate curriculum methods and materials to volunteer tutors or teaching aides as needed.
  • Pack up and move classroom spaces as part of the teaching responsibilities.
  • Represent the university positively to community partners and at partner-owned teaching locations.
  • Assist with registration, orientation, and technology sessions; help lead standardized assessments and student communications.
  • Attend workshops, trainings, and in-service sessions as requested by the leadership team.
  • Perform record keeping, reporting, and data-entry responsibilities.
  • Work closely with other lead teaching staff on materials, student goals, and testing to ensure program goals are met.
  • Conduct student outreach as part of the program's retention strategy.
  • Inform students of and uphold school policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in ESL or a related field.
  • Fluency in a language other than English, preferably Spanish, or intermediate language skills with experience from long-term language study.
  • Experience with standard educational assessment tools, including CASAS and Best Plus.
  • Ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of immigrant, low-income, marginalized, and diverse urban populations.
