Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, optics engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of design experience with optics and instrument design, preferably optomechanical or imaging devices, or experimental setups (research and extracurricular academic projects qualify)
  • Project experience with one of: integrated fiber optics, photonic integrated circuits, telescope design, or camera design
  • Working knowledge of CAD, finite element analysis, schematic and PCBA design, and/or ray tracing
  • Graduate degree in experimental physics, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, optics engineering, astronomical instrumentation, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of professional experience with opto-mechanics, imaging sensors, lens design, fiber optics, laser optics, and/or machine vision
  • Passion for spaceflight and demonstrated experience designing and implementing high-reliability, rugged hardware from concept through execution
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a product from concept to production; working through system and design trades, pushing back on requirements, and following through with verification and validation
  • Ability to break and analyze problems down to the fundamental physics; strong optics fundamentals
  • Proficiency with CAD, ray tracing, and finite element analysis design tools; optics modeling and simulation, computer vision
  • Proficiency writing software for modeling, data collection and analysis, controls, and image processing in Python
  • High level of proficiency with lab equipment for development optics testing, including sophisticated test definition, troubleshooting, data collection, and data reduction techniques
  • Portfolio of implemented projects with a description of the candidate's contribution
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, self-starting, and demanding atmosphere; excellent communication skills both written and verbal; and demonstrated leadership in a team environment
  • Cross functional project management skills and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines, as demonstrated on multiple programs
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones
  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Responsibilities
  • Develop high reliability imaging and laser optical navigation sensors
  • Be an extreme owner for flight hardware, from conception through build, qualification, and ultimately flight operations
  • Drive design trades, product requirements, technology and component selection, analyses, prototyping, bring-up, documentation, manufacturing planning, and production test
  • Define performance and survivability validation approaches and create development and qualification testing campaigns to exercise designs to their limits and ensure reliable flight hardware
  • Act as liaison with NASA counterparts to provide technical insight and lead creation of deliverables for Crew Starship milestones

Company Overview
SpaceX's mission is to make humanity multiplanetary. The company is working on a next generation of fully reusable launch vehicles that will be the most powerful ever built, capable of carrying humans to Mars and other destinations in the solar system.
Benefits
  • Benefits and Perks - Our employees’ well-being is important to us and essential to our capacity to do extraordinary things. We offer a wide variety of programs to support the health, wellness, and financial security of our employees and their families.
Company Core Values
  • Make History - SpaceX has gained worldwide attention for a series of historic milestones. It is the only private company capable of returning a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, and in 2012 our Dragon spacecraft became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to and from the International Space Station. And in 2020, SpaceX became the first private company to take humans there as well.
  • Reusability - SpaceX believes a fully and rapidly reusable rocket is the pivotal breakthrough needed to substantially reduce the cost of space access. The majority of the launch cost comes from building the rocket, which historically has flown only once.
  • Landing - SpaceX’s family of Falcon launch vehicles are the first and only orbital class rockets capable of reflight. Depending on the performance required for the mission, Falcon lands on one of our autonomous spaceport droneships out on the ocean or one of our landing zones near our launch pads.
