Quantum Genesis will serve as a foundational element of DOE's broader artificial intelligence-focused Genesis Mission, which is designed to usher in a new era of computational power for the nation to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation. Brookhaven Lab to lead $14M AI project for nation's Electric Grid. The award to Brookhaven and its collaborators will support three years of research to develop a next-generation grid foundation model (GridFM), an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can rapidly simulate scenarios for adding new loads to the electric grid. With the goal of building a model that can simulate 1 billion scenarios in 24 hours, the project aims to significantly accelerate grid expansion planning with optimal accuracy, affordability, and efficiency in operations. OE is administering the funding for this Genesis Mission project, called "Foundation Models for the Electric Grid: From Proof of Concept to Real-world Impacts." $3.9 million of the total project funds will be allocated to Brookhaven, with the rest being shared by collaborating institutions. "This project represents a bold step forward to supercharge scientific discovery using artificial intelligence to modernize America's electric grid," Assistant Secretary Jereza said. "By providing utilities enhanced AI tools, they can plan and operate the grid faster, more reliably, and more cost-effectively to help meet the demands of a growing economy while delivering affordable, reliable power for homes and businesses while unleashing American energy dominance." The GridFM initiative, on a larger scale, is a community project spanning industry, academia, and government, with contributions from more than 150 organizations. Open-source development of GridFM is administered and managed in partnership with the Linux Foundation Energy. U.S. Department of Energy allocates $7.3M for high-energy physics Quantum Outposts. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $7.3 million in total funding for eight multi-institutional research projects under its "Quantum Outposts on the Energy and Intensity Frontiers" initiative. Operating under the DOE Office of Science's High Energy Physics (HEP) program, the projects integrate quantum information science (QIS) tools into particle accelerator experiments, collision analyses, and neutrino research. Governor Hochul announces milestone in expansion in New York State's Quantum communications network. August 21, 2026 Partnership Between State University of New York at Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory Creates Nation's Largest Quantum Network Builds on Momentum of the State's Quantum Innovation and Research Excellence Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a milestone in the partnership between the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory to extend New York State's existing quantum communications network. The successful experiment by researchers at both institutions marks a key step in advancing this partnership and the cutting-edge quantum technology needed to expand the quantum network across the state. The expansion of the quantum communications network will enable new discoveries across various industrial sectors, bolster research and cybersecurity, improve computer operations including for large language models, and unlock new opportunities to improve New Yorkers' lives. "New York State is committed to investing in cutting-edge research and innovation in emerging fields that move our society forward," Governor Hochul said. "The partnership between the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory serves as an excellent example of how collaboration can advance discovery and create transformative technologies." Researchers at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Brookhaven Lab have successfully transmitted light particles containing quantum information through open air between the two institutions. The researchers used a laser to generate quantum states of light, each containing just a few individual photons, in the state-of-the-art Quantum Watchtower at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. From the Watchtower, the photons exited the core of an optical fiber approximately 5 microns in diameter, which is less than one-tenth the width of a human hair, and travelled 13 miles to Brookhaven National Laboratory's Quantum Lighthouse in Upton, New York. This is a key breakthrough toward extending the nation's longest quantum network - already connecting eight nodes across several institutions - beyond the limits of fiber-optic cables. The Quantum Lighthouse and Quantum Watchtower, along with a third facility under development at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, make up a free-space optical (FSO) link that adds a wireless component to the record-setting quantum network currently spanning 161 miles and several institutions across Long Island and the New York City metropolitan area. Using this network, pioneered by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Brookhaven Lab, researchers can transmit entangled photons that are intrinsically linked by the laws of quantum mechanics through commercial fiber. Successfully testing the transmission of photons across free-space links demonstrates a promising path toward connecting quantum devices across long distances. The researchers anticipate being able to use the free-space optical link to connect future quantum computers at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Laboratory, and far beyond, which will enable them to work together and tackle some of the nation's most pressing scientific challenges. CU, Infleqtion tapped to help build 'world's most powerful scientific platform' BOULDER - Two Boulder organizations - the University of Colorado and quantum firm Infleqtion Inc. (NYSE: INFQ) - have been recruited for key roles in the Genesis Mission, a Trump administration effort, led by the U.S. Department of Energy, that the government says will "build the world's most powerful scientific platform." The Genesis Mission "unites DOE National Labs, industry, academia, and more to harness AI for breakthroughs in energy dominance, discovery science, and national security," according to the mission website. Administration officials pledged this week that federal agencies will commit $5 billion to the mission, and some of that funding is flowing into Boulder. Sponsored Content CU said that it will receive six grants totalling $2.4 million for scientific discovery efforts that run the gamut from using artificial intelligence to control plasma in fusion energy systems to applying quantum computers to fusion energy simulations to discovering new fundamental particles in physics using AI to creating an AI-driven flood-prediction framework. "These awards reflect the strength of CU Boulder's research enterprise and our researchers' ability to build ambitious, interdisciplinary collaborations needed to tackle some of our nation's most important scientific challenges," Massimo Ruzzene, CU senior vice chancellor for research and innovation, said in a prepared statement. While Infleqtion is part of a much broader cohort of Genesis collaborators earmarked for $250 million, it wasn't immediately clear Thursday how much of that total the Boulder quantum firm expects to receive. "AI data centers are pulling more power than the grid was ever built to handle, and the industry is recognizing that these types of issues are beyond the capabilities of classical computing alone," Infleqtion CEO Matthew Kinsella said in a prepared statement. "By applying quantum computing to some of the hardest problems in nuclear and energy research, Infleqtion is playing a critical role in advancing the objectives of the Genesis Mission."
