Requirements
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (R.N.).
  • The candidate must be registered and licensed to practice in the applicable state.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 12 months of nursing experience and 6 months of specialized experience providing clinical nursing care to dialysis patients in either a chronic or acute setting.
  • The candidate must be certified in CPR or successfully complete a CPR certification course.
  • The candidate must have verbal and written communication skills.
  • The candidate must complete the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
  • The candidate must be able to work in an environment where exposure to infectious and contagious diseases or materials may occur.
Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, support, and direction to direct patient care staff, including informal ongoing feedback and formal input for annual performance evaluations.
  • Participate in department staffing and appropriate hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions, and recommend or initiate disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with company and facility procedures and policies and with regulations established by state and federal agencies.
  • Approve or disapprove time or personnel schedule changes in the absence of the Facility Administrator while ensuring compliance with applicable requirements for documenting staff work hours.
  • Participate in patient care plan meetings.
  • Maintain current knowledge of dialysis principles and techniques by participating in scheduled in-service training.
  • Train and orient staff as necessary.
  • Observe and guide direct patient care staff regarding appropriate techniques and adherence to facility policies and procedures.
  • Promote and assist with compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration programs to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Maintain overall shift operations safely, efficiently, and effectively.
  • Conduct staff meetings with the Facility Administrator at least monthly or as needed to communicate changes in patient care needs or operations.
  • Meet routinely with the Facility Administrator to discuss personnel and patient-care status, issues, and information.
  • Supervise documentation of patient information.
  • Coordinate Charge Nurse duties with Staff Registered Nurses acting in a relief-charge capacity.
  • Assess daily patient-care needs and develop and distribute patient-care assignments appropriately.
  • Assume primary responsibility in emergency situations.
  • Assess patient needs, respond to dialysis treatments, communicate concerns to the rounding physician, and implement directed changes in patient care or treatment.
  • Monitor and supervise patient-care activity during dialysis and assist as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the direct patient-care team to make decisions that benefit patient care.
  • Continuously monitor patients' conditions for problems and potential complications associated with dialysis.
  • Administer medications to patients according to physician orders.
  • Act as the subject-matter expert and resource for staff members.
  • Supervise and participate in completing short- and long-term care plans.
  • Admit new patients according to facility procedures.
  • Ensure that patients' educational needs are met and educate patients and families about end-stage renal disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medication.
  • Supervise the safe and effective use of equipment involved in direct patient care.
  • Operate dialysis-related and emergency equipment safely and efficiently when needed.
  • Perform required testing and verification and initial the checklist for start-up and shutdown procedures outlined in the Technical Services Manual.
  • Complete the Nurse's Technical Training Program for Water Quality Facility.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties assigned by the Facility Administrator.
  • Assist with interviewing potential direct patient-care staff.
  • Promote efficient use of medical supplies.
  • Attend and participate in monthly Quality Assurance meetings.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations as required by the work.
Desired Qualifications
  • Medical/surgical nursing experience is preferred.
  • Supervisory or management experience is preferred.
