Requirements
- Graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- Acute care or behavioral medicine experience is preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Ability to work protracted or irregular hours and around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for behavioral medicine patients and their families in behavioral medicine hospitalization and ambulatory settings.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and urgent or emergent evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations when appropriate, in collaboration with behavioral medicine faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized plans of care that include teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum allowed by the clinician's education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex behavioral medicine care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate behavioral medicine patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage the individual needs of patients and families.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for behavioral medicine patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in behavioral medicine practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, serving as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to behavioral medicine patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret behavioral medicine data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist behavioral medicine faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
