Requirements
  • You have worked as a professional machinist for 5+ years, and as a manager/supervisor for 3+ years
  • You can perform traditional management tasks such as performance assessments, discipline, 1:1 coaching, and lead group activities
  • You are intimately familiar with the current offerings of cutting tool technology and workholding for CNC lathes and VTLs
  • You have run CNC lathes / VTLs / Swiss lathes (or comparable) with bar feeders or automatic loading
  • You have spec'd, purchased, and managed installation CNC equipment
  • You understand the technical differences between types of materials, their grades, and their relative machinability
  • You understand feeds and speeds and can diagnose surface finish, tool life, and dimensional issues
  • You are proficient with measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, and the use of surface plates
  • You can read shop drawings with fluency, including GD&T
  • You can institute new processes that streamline workflow and increase part quality
  • You must be familiar with principles of lean manufacturing, such as 5S
  • You have strong interpersonal skills, and can make yourself available to shop staff, designers/technicians, and management, always
  • You can build budgets, plan growth, and report on performance
  • You are able to work with designers in order to advocate design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • You are a mentor to others and can support professional growth and positive shop culture
  • You demonstrate a high level of professionalism
  • You can participate with recruiting to grow the Production Shop team
  • You can lift 40+lbs, push heavy carts or crates, and can stretch, reach, kneel, or crawl as may be required by certain tasks
  • You have CAD and CAM software experience, can type 40+ WPM, and are proficient with Word and Excel
  • You undertake projects and tasks with a distinct attention to detail and a sense of urgency

Responsibilities
  • Lead your team professionally and respectfully. You bring a positive attitude and make yourself approachable
  • Oversee the commissioning, operation, and expansion of our lights-out capable FMS and machinery
  • Interface with tool and workholding vendors as well as machine tool service and applications
  • Improve and implement processes that support our goals of cost, speed, and quality
  • Drive shop improvements, critical path projects, and other initiatives that support the company plan
  • Planning projects and reporting on performance
  • Intercept missing tools, workholding, materials, or essential skill sets that would otherwise stall the schedule, and work to implement solutions
  • Troubleshoot any number of issues that stand in the way of schedule - from machine alarms to workholding challenges - and implement sustainable solutions
  • Support the shop team by advising on machining approach, inspection, CAM programming, and scheduling specifics, as needed. You are able to identify key growth areas for team members, and can provide opportunities and feedback that supports their professional improvement
  • Recruit additional team shop members
  • Improve shop effectiveness. You have an understanding of what continuous improvement looks like, and you leverage your position as Shop Scheduler to support that end
Desired Qualifications
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience as a machinist in a professional shop environment
  • Experience in a high-mix, fast paced job shop as a machinist or scheduler
  • Prior employment in company with headcount growth of 2-10x
  • Mastercam, CAM, NX, Simulation, Fastems MMS, or ERP experience
  • Experience with other mfg processes: turning, welding, sheet metal, waterjet, assembly, or finish work
  • Trained in an engineering or design discipline
  • Experience in a QA/QC profession
  • Certification in lean mfg or GD&T competency
