Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Two to five years of experience developing and deploying machine-learning or autonomy software on robotic, autonomous, or uncrewed aircraft systems platforms.
  • Strong C++ and Python development skills, including Linux-based development and modern machine-learning frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of perception, sensor integration, autonomous decision-making or planning, and real-time system integration.
  • Professional working proficiency in English, spoken and written, is required.
  • Ability to work effectively in office, engineering laboratory, aircraft integration, hangar, and outdoor flight-test environments.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and work around aircraft, ground-support equipment, test equipment, and computing hardware for extended periods as required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and position equipment and components weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to safely work outdoors in varying weather conditions during ground- and flight-test activities.
  • Ability to work around aircraft systems, electrical equipment, rotating equipment, batteries, and other laboratory and flight-test hazards while following applicable safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to visually inspect equipment and read computer displays, instrumentation, schematics, logs, and test data, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, integrate, and deploy machine-learning and autonomy capabilities for uncrewed aircraft, emphasizing reliable operation on real aircraft and onboard compute.
  • Develop mission-level autonomous behaviors using combinations of state machines, behavior trees, planners, optimization methods, deterministic logic, and machine learning.
  • Develop and integrate perception capabilities including object detection, classification, tracking, scene understanding, sensor fusion, and geospatial reasoning.
  • Integrate autonomy software with autopilots, companion computers, mission computers, sensors, payloads, data links, and ground-control-station and command-and-control systems while maintaining clear interfaces with flight-control functions.
  • Develop production-quality C++ and Python software for real-time and near-real-time execution, including optimization for NVIDIA graphics processing units and embedded edge-compute platforms.
  • Develop and use simulation, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, bench-test, and automated-test environments to evaluate autonomy behavior and reduce risk before flight.
  • Support aircraft integration, ground testing, and flight testing of autonomy capabilities, including analysis of logs and test data to characterize performance and drive improvements.
  • Collaborate with Machine Learning Engineers, Platform Engineers, Flight Test, avionics, electrical, mechanical, and other engineering teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Direct experience with uncrewed aircraft systems autonomy, aircraft integration, or flight testing.
  • Experience with NVIDIA edge compute, CUDA, TensorRT, ROS 2, MAVLink, or comparable robotics and vehicle interfaces.
  • Aerospace or defense experience and eligibility to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance.

Heven AeroTech has appointed Lexi Alexander as chief growth officer to lead operational scaling and international expansion. Alexander brings over 20 years of defence growth leadership in cyber warfare, AI data platforms, and secure logistics. The Virginia-based hydrogen-powered drone manufacturer has expanded its workforce by 132%, growing from 38 employees at year-end 2025 to 88 currently. The company has also appointed three additional executives: Dr Karen Swider-Lyons as VP of hydrogen, Samantha Hamilton as VP of AI, and Gaston Paz as head of manufacturing and operational strategy. Heven AeroTech manufactures hydrogen-powered unmanned aerial systems with AI and quantum-enabled capabilities for defence applications. Hydrogen-powered Z1 UAS enters U.S. Army acquisition pipeline. Heven AeroTech has secured a Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) with the U.S. Army Contracting Command - Redstone Arsenal for its Z1 hydrogen-powered unmanned aircraft system and supporting hydrogen generation systems. Hydrogen-powered Z1 enters Army acquisition pipeline. Effective January 2026, the BOA establishes a streamlined contract vehicle for Army units to acquire the Z1 and associated hydrogen infrastructure through the U.S. Army UAS Project Office. The agreement leverages the Z1's status as a Blue UAS Select platform, aligning the system with Department of Defense requirements for secure, domestically aligned unmanned aircraft. "This agreement represents an important step in reducing procurement friction for Army units seeking advanced UAS capabilities," said Michael Buscher, Heven AeroTech President of U.S. Operations. "Hydrogen-powered systems offer extended endurance, logistical flexibility, and reduced dependency on traditional fuel and battery supply chains." Focus on long-endurance UAS operations. Heven AeroTech positions the Z1 as a hydrogen-powered, runway-independent drone engineered for mission-critical missions that require long endurance and flexible payload options. Hydrogen fuel supports extended flight times compared to conventional battery-powered platforms and enables rapid refueling through dedicated hydrogen generation systems in the field. The BOA is intended to support rapid deployment, technology maturation, testing and evaluation, system integration, fielding, sustainment, and modernization of Z1-based UAS capabilities across Army units. According to Buscher, "Through this BOA, we are positioned to provide Army units with a pre-negotiated acquisition pathway to Heven's systems, enabling faster procurement and accelerating our ability to support evolving mission requirements with resilient, domestically aligned technology." The agreement aligns with the Administration's Executive Order on "Unleashing American Drone Dominance," which emphasizes strengthening U.S. drone capabilities and the domestic industrial base.
