AI breakthrough at Roswell Park targets one of cancer's deadliest forms.

AI breakthrough at Roswell Park targets one of cancer's deadliest forms. TrialSite Staff | Making Biomedical Research Evidence Accessible to All Mar. 31, 2026, 1:00 p.m. Researchers at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, led by thoracic oncologist Prantesh Jain, alongside Anant Madabhushi of Emory University, have developed an artificial intelligence-driven tool that may reshape how clinicians treat extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC) - one of the most aggressive and lethal cancers. The tool, called PhenopyCell, functions as a computational biomarker, analyzing standard pathology slides to predict whether a patient will respond to platinum-based chemotherapy - before treatment even begins. This is critical in SCLC, where roughly 70% of patients present with advanced disease and survival is often measured in just over a year. Quality journalism costs money to produce. This recognition is based on the same physician-led research behind their prestigious Top Doctor recognition, combining peer input with comprehensive patient data and performance metrics. The list recognizes 1,663 Top Hospitals for their overall excellence and strong performance in 6 specialties and 19 procedures. Those specialties include cancer surgery, heart & vascular surgery, general surgery, obstetrics & gynecological surgery, orthopedic, and urologic surgery. Roswell Park is the only nationally ranked center for cancer surgery, specifically lung cancer surgery, in Western New York. Castle Connolly also recognized the center for general surgery, noting its colon surgery. Hospitals are selected through a rigorous process that uses data to analyze the patient journey while undergoing care, including pre- and post-procedure. Castle Connolly's performance metrics include mortality rate, complication rate, Patient Safety Indicator (PSI90) and Failure to Rescue (FTR). Castle Connolly also factors in the number of Top Doctors within the specialty area for the measured procedure. They incorporate physician expertise through hospital nominations. "This honor underscores our commitment to delivering outstanding cancer care close to home for the people of Western New York and beyond," says Candace S. Johnson, PhD, President & CEO of Roswell Park. "Every member of the Roswell Park team plays a role in earning recognitions like this, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve our patients with excellence." Earlier this year, Castle Connolly named more than 30 Roswell Park physicians to its Top Doctors list. They represent the top 7% of doctors nationwide. From the world's first chemotherapy research to the PSA prostate cancer biomarker, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center generates innovations that shape how cancer is detected, treated and prevented worldwide. The Roswell Park team of 4,000+ makes compassionate, patient-centered cancer care and services accessible across New York State and beyond. Rated "Exceptional" by the National Cancer Institute, Roswell Park, founded in 1898, was one of the first NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country and remains the only one in Upstate New York. Roswell Park unveils new mobile prostate and breast cancer screening unit in Western New York

Roswell Park unveils new mobile prostate and breast cancer screening unit in Western New York. BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has unveiled the new EDDY Mobile Breast & Prostate Cancer Screening Center. The new mobile cancer screening program marks the first in the region to address early detection for the three most common invasive cancers. The unit is funded in part by Governor Hochul and New York State to improve health equity and reduce cancer's burden on underserved urban, rural and minority communities. EDDY will provide convenient access to state-of-the-art screening services for individuals at a higher risk who may have no other options to receive cancer screening services. "We're bringing state-of-the-art screening and expertise to neighborhoods and communities that have been endangered by insufficient resources and barriers to care," Roswell Park CEO Candace Johnson said. "Where you live should not determine how healthy you are." The mobile center will take off in December, with a focus on the City of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. WATCH: Roswell Park unveils new mobile prostate and breast cancer screening unit in Western New York. Data shows that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Black women who are diagnosed are more likely to have advanced disease and lower survival than white women. Screening can detect a possible cancer before it spreads. Women who are ages 40 and older should be screened yearly, and women should begin speaking with their doctor about it at age 25. "Mammograms save lives, but too many women still miss screenings because of circumstances beyond their control," Roswell Park Chair of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging Ermelinda Bonaccio said. Since Roswell Park launched Early Detection Driven to You in 2022, the EDDY Mobile Lung Cancer Screening Center has visited 52 unique locations across Western New York, screening nearly 2,000 people.
