Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Nursing and 4 years of clinical nursing experience, including 1 year of experience with clinical chart review, monitoring of clinical data, and process improvement are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Clinical experience in perioperative nursing, an inpatient surgical unit, or a surgical clinic is required.
- A Registered Nurse license in New York State is required.
- The role requires proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, software and web applications, and an electronic medical record.
- The role requires the ability to interact with all associated team members and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner.
- The role requires detail orientation, strong organizational and prioritization skills, and the ability to work independently under general guidance.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Program in accordance with American College of Surgeons Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient 2022 standards and the Hospital Quality Office.
- Use the Trauma Registry and other data sources to identify individual cases requiring further review using audit filters, complications, and event triggers.
- Ensure timely case abstraction, review, and escalation as needed.
- Use the Trauma Registry and other data sources to track and trend audit filters, complications, and event triggers to identify patterns and trends in care delivery.
- Implement data-driven, evidence-based quality initiatives in coordination with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
- Use American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program benchmarking reports to analyze trauma center outcomes and aid in prioritizing performance improvement activities and projects.
- Monitor the effectiveness of quality initiatives and interventions after implementation and escalate unresolved issues as necessary.
- Work with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to create and implement evidence-based policies and procedures to optimize patient care.
- Provide oversight and management of RL Solutions for the Trauma Surgery Service.
- Participate in divisional, departmental, and hospital quality committees.
- Support and participate in divisional, departmental, and hospital quality initiatives.
- Participate in the Root Cause Analysis process.
- Participate in Joint Commission surveys.
- Perform meticulous chart review on individual cases to identify opportunities for improvement, enhance patient outcomes, and complete thorough Performance Improvement and Patient Safety documentation, including event resolution with loop closure, for all required individual case reviews.
- Maintain the Performance Improvement and Patient Safety database, quality dashboards, and audits.
- Provide routine data reports to Trauma Program leadership, the Department of Surgery, and multidisciplinary trauma committees and teams as requested.
- Collaborate with Trauma Registrars to define Performance Improvement and Patient Safety audit filters, complications, and event triggers to ensure consistent and accurate data capture within the Trauma Registry.
- Maintain required documentation for the American College of Surgeons trauma verification visit as directed by the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
- Support Trauma Program research activities by providing access to and assistance with analysis of relevant data as directed by the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
- Provide routine reports on Trauma Clinical Practice Guideline compliance.
- Facilitate and support Performance Improvement and Patient Safety meetings with multidisciplinary teams to identify opportunities for improvement in trauma patient care, processes, and systems.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in implementing Performance Improvement and Patient Safety initiatives related to care of injured patients in coordination with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
- Create the agenda and complete meeting minutes for the weekly Mortality and Morbidity Meeting.
- Coordinate interdepartmental case reviews and ensure timely response and follow-up.
- Communicate Performance Improvement and Patient Safety findings and follow-up actions thoroughly to all involved multidisciplinary teams.
- Represent the Kessler Trauma Program in program, local, regional, state, and national meetings.
- Participate in community outreach and education activities under the direction of the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager.
- In collaboration with the Trauma Service Nurse Educator, provide education on Performance Improvement and Patient Safety initiatives, trends, and opportunities to providers involved in caring for injured patients.
- Participate in preparation for and the site visit for American College of Surgeons trauma center verification.
Desired Qualifications
- Three (3) years of clinical chart review, performance improvement, and/or data analysis is preferred.
- Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience is preferred.
- Performance improvement or quality assurance experience at an American College of Surgeons Level 1 trauma center is preferred.
- Five (5) years in clinical nursing in an emergency department or inpatient trauma service is preferred.
- Supervisory or management experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
- Statistical knowledge is preferred.
- Clinical chart review and abstraction experience is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills to facilitate professional, courteous, and efficient communication with internal and external parties are preferred.
- Strong data analysis and interpretation skills are preferred.
- Clinical Nurse Specialist certification is preferred.
- Trauma Certified Registered Nurse certification is preferred.
- Advanced Trauma Certified Nurse certification is preferred.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course certification is preferred.
- Certified Emergency Nurse certification is preferred.
- Critical Care Registered Nurse certification is preferred.
