Requirements
  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing, for nurse practitioner applicants.
  • National certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center, for nurse practitioner applicants.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for nurse practitioner applicants.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Sciences, Master's Degree in Medical Sciences, or Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, for physician assistant applicants.
  • Certification by the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants, for physician assistant applicants.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine, for physician assistant applicants.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification may be required at the department's discretion.
  • Eligible new graduates will be considered.
  • Ability to perform clinical evaluations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, care coordination, discharge planning, and follow-up within the applicable scope of practice.
  • Ability to recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Ability to use clinical equipment safely and base decisions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
  • Ability to use computers proficiently.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to meet physical demands including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • Ability to work closely with others, around biohazards and infectious diseases, with or near deceased persons, with hands in water, and near electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Complete consults and emergent evaluations.
  • Order additional tests or consults in collaboration with Dermatology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinical and hospital staff regarding abnormal evaluation findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge and disposition by coordinating services, follow-up tests, appointments, and care arrangements.
  • Provide care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of education and certification.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Assist with collection of applicable outcome measures.
  • Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual Dermatology patient needs.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Maintain current professional knowledge and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for Dermatology patients.
  • Provide educational programs for professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature in the area of expertise.
  • Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, evaluations, and disposition plans in the medical record according to hospital policies and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in Dermatology.
  • Lead the development and implementation of changes in Dermatology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret Dermatology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, access-to-care measures, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist Dermatology faculty, administrators, and directors with collection of outcome measures.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Dermatology experience.
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
  • A master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant.
