Lubbock Avalanche-Journal On Monday, UMC Health System, in partnership with Safe Haven Baby Boxes and community organizations, dedicated and blessed a Safe Haven Baby Box on its main campus. "Ultimately, the Baby Box provides a safe alternative," said Jill Shanklin, vice president of Nursing Excellence & Maternal-Child Services at UMC Health System. The fully secured, climate-controlled, and monitored device is located at the east-side entrance of Medical Office Plaza II on UMC Health System's Main Campus - located at 808 Joliet Ave. According to UMC, when an infant is placed inside the Baby Box, the exterior door automatically locks and an alarm immediately notifies on-site Urgent Care personnel with the system, ensuring immediate response, medical evaluation, and compassionate care. After being medically checked, the infant is then placed into protective custody, where arrangements are made for ongoing care or adoption.
