Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in an occupational therapy curriculum accredited by ACOTE standards is required.
  • Initial registration from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy is required.
  • A valid and unencumbered occupational therapy license is required in the state of practice.
  • A valid driver's license or reliable, independent transportation to and from patients' residences is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide outpatient rehabilitation services in patients' homes, including private residences and independent living facilities.
  • Organize and conduct occupational therapy programs to facilitate rehabilitation.
  • Direct patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance.
  • Facilitate learning of skills and functions needed for adaptation and productivity.
  • Supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants, temporary licensees, students, and support personnel as necessary and in accordance with licensure requirements and professional standards.
  • Adhere to department and patient treatment schedules and complete timely clinical and billing documentation.
  • Attend and contribute to patient care, staffing conferences, and related meetings.
  • Make referrals to other disciplines and agencies to address patients' comprehensive needs.
  • Consult with rehabilitation team members, including community physicians, to select appropriate therapeutic regimens.
  • Adapt programs and plans of care to individual patient needs.
  • Promote a safe environment and eliminate fire and safety hazards.
  • Order supplies and equipment as necessary.
  • Clean and maintain equipment and identify and report repair needs.
  • Ensure patients and families receive high-quality service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere.
  • Screen, examine, and evaluate patients; establish diagnoses; identify impairments; determine predicted improvement and treatment timelines; identify precautions and contraindications; and design plans of care.
  • Develop treatment goals and methods with patients and caregivers, implement occupational therapy treatment plans, and complete related documentation and record keeping.
  • Apply therapeutic techniques involving cognitive skills, muscle strength, coordination, endurance, mobility, perceptual abilities, sensory awareness, sitting and standing tolerance, balance, activities of daily living, joint protection, work simplification, orientation, physical agent modalities, low vision, falls risk management, medication management, health and wellness, community integration and reintegration, and case management in home and community settings.
  • Design, fabricate, fit, and apply adaptive devices, including orthotics and prosthetics, and train patients in their use.
  • Select activities suited to each individual's physical and mental capacity, intelligence level, and interests.
  • Instruct patients in skills and techniques for functional activities and evaluate their progress, attitudes, and behavior.
  • Perform routine reexaminations as needed to modify or progress treatment plans.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
