Requirements
  • Formal legal qualifications and/or extensive dispute resolution experience, with a substantial record of achievement at an executive level within banking and finance, a tribunal, an external dispute resolution scheme, a regulatory body, a related industry organisation, or private legal practice.
  • Broad and practical knowledge of financial services law, including consumer credit, lending, and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Ability to distil complex, multilayered issues, manage an active caseload efficiently and independently, and maintain an outcomes-focused mindset.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, authoritatively, and empathetically in written determinations, stakeholder engagement, and presentations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse cross-section of the financial services sector and the broader community.
  • Balanced judgement, emotional intelligence, resilience, professionalism, and composure when facing challenge, scrutiny, or criticism.
  • A thoughtful, constructive engagement style grounded in fairness.
Responsibilities
  • Resolve complex, high-impact disputes involving consumer credit, lending, financial hardship, and related banking and finance matters.
  • Make determinations grounded in fairness, independence, and AFCA’s rules, including decisions that may be binding on financial firms.
  • Provide technical and professional leadership across AFCA.
  • Mentor and uplift adjudicators and case teams.
  • Contribute to thought leadership and evolving approaches to dispute resolution.
  • Represent AFCA as a trusted expert at conferences and industry forums.
  • Build trusted relationships with regulators, consumer advocates, government, and industry stakeholders.
  • Help drive better industry behaviour and accountability and shape the future of dispute resolution.
