- Retrieve and disburse messages from the answering service or machine and facsimile machine, including RightFax.
- Open, date, and distribute incoming mail and answer routine correspondence.
- Collect deductibles, co-insurance, co-pays, and balances at the time of service using EPIC and Virtual Merchant according to organizational targets.
- Balance charge and payment entries with the daily report, make corrections as needed, void payments, and notify reconciliation staff and the manager.
- Maintain and accurately balance the cash drawer daily.
- Schedule tests and procedures ordered by the provider and complete associated paperwork, including laboratory and X-ray documentation.
- Scan test results, physician referral reports, correspondence, and other information into the patient record, linking referral reports to the original order when applicable.
- Enter charges and payments made at the time of service accurately and according to defined policies.
- Handle routine billing questions and forward questions requiring research to the financial counselor.
- Respond to medical record requests, including requesting information from the Health Information Management department.
- Register patients in Epic upon arrival, collect accurate demographic information, complete the checklist, and comply with system stops.
- Collect and organize insurance information, ask the MSPQ, scan insurance cards and identification documents, and use RTE and external websites for verification.
- Collect workers' compensation billing information, access the protocol form portal, and collect protocol information when no protocol exists.
- Discuss Care Everywhere and medical-record transfers with patients and obtain appropriate patient consent in accordance with HIPAA.
- Follow Mercy safety guidelines, perform job-specific safety duties, and promptly report unsafe conditions, incidents, and injuries.
- A background in medical terminology and coding is preferred.
- One year of experience in a medical office environment is preferred.
- Two years of customer service experience are preferred.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

May 29, 2026 Local bakers to retire following Farmers Market season Two longtime Le Mars-area bakers have announced they will retire from the baking business this fall. Rob and Joyce Scheitler, the couple behind The Scheitler Bakers and one of the organizers of the Le Mars Farmers Market, made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday. Speaking to KLEM, Rob Scheitler says the time was right to hang up the apron. Audio Player Scheitler says their retirement will not affect the future of the Farmers Market. Audio Player The Scheitler Bakers began in 2017, when Joyce joined a small farmers market group in Merrill, and has expanded from there into what Rob says is the largest in-home baking market in the Siouxland area. Audio Player The couple says they will continue to fulfill orders through September 30th and will continue working the Farmers Market until October, before hanging up the apron for good. LifeNet medical helicopter begins serving Siouxland region LifeNet of the Heartland is providing helicopter emergency medical service in Sioux City, and celebrated its opening with a Siouxland Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting luncheon in Sioux City's Riverside Park on Wednesday. Since opening last November, LifeNet 1-4 has already transported over 90 patients across the Siouxland region to receive medical care. Ethan Neff is the clinical base lead and head flight nurse. Audio Player LifeNet 1-4 crew members serve the tri-state area and fly an EC-130 air ambulance across western Iowa, eastern Nebraska and southeast South Dakota. The event, held at the Hallagan Education Center, celebrated the Auxiliary's fundraising efforts over the past year while also unveiling projects funded by the organization in 2026. Organizers said this year's brunch also focused on cancer survivorship and the importance of support after treatment. The featured program, "Thriving After Cancer - Closing the Gap," highlighted coordinated, patient-centered care for cancer survivors. Speakers included Traci Ridgway, a survivorship coordinator and advanced registered nurse practitioner, and Alissa McEowen, director of oncology clinic operations at Mercy's Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Mercy Medical Center has named Joe Malas as its new executive vice president and chief financial officer, the organization announced Monday. Malas, who holds an MBA and is a certified public accountant, will join Mercy on March 30. He currently serves as vice president and chief financial officer at Mercyhealth, a regional health network with $1.3 billion in operating revenue and more than 85 facilities serving communities across Illinois and Wisconsin. Previously, Malas spent five years as chief financial officer at Genesis Health System in Davenport and 18 years in financial leadership roles at Advocate Aurora Health System in Illinois. Malas brings 30 years of experience in healthcare finance, including leading complex organizations through financial planning and operational transformation. "Joe brings deep expertise in healthcare finance and a strong commitment to aligning financial strategy with quality, access and patient-centered care," Mercy President and CEO Dr. Timothy Quinn said in a statement. "His leadership will be instrumental as we continue strengthening Mercy's financial position and advancing thoughtful growth and cost improvement." In addition to his professional background, Malas has been involved in community service, serving on boards and committees for nonprofit organizations and through his church.
