Position Summary
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for helping drive the company’s goals and initiatives by enforcing deadlines, participating in creating solutions, developing ad-hoc reporting, driving continuous improvement initiatives, developing the management team, and assisting in the administration of the Company’s ERP system. The person in this role will also assist in managing the company’s financial operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. Ensure compliance with accounting standards (e.g., Generally Accepted Accounting Principles - GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
- Month-End and Year-End Close: Assist in the month-end and year-end closing processes, which may involve reconciling accounts, making adjusting journal entries, and ensuring all financial transactions are accurately recorded.
- Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and areas of improvement. Provide insights to management to support decision-making.
- Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist in the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts. Monitor performance against budgeted figures and provide explanations for any deviations.
- Internal Controls: Help establish and maintain internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations. This may involve developing and implementing new controls as needed.
- Audit Support: Assist with external and internal audits by providing auditors with necessary documentation and explanations. Ensure audit findings are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
- Tax Compliance: Collaborate with the tax department or external tax advisors to ensure accurate and timely filing of tax returns. Stay updated on tax laws and regulations.
- Financial Systems: Utilize financial software and systems to manage and maintain financial data efficiently. Recommend improvements or upgrades to financial systems when necessary.
- Supervision: the Assistant Controller will be responsible for supervising a team of professionals and assist with professional development.
- Special Projects: Participate in special financial projects, such as process improvements, cost reduction initiatives, or system implementations.
Education, Experience, & Training
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA certification required.
- 8-10+ years of relevant experience in financial reporting and technical accounting, preferably in a publicly traded company.
- Big 4 experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and SEC regulations.
- Strong understanding of SOX Compliance and Internal Controls
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
- Experience with financial reporting software and ERP systems.
- Prior management experience required. Experience managing direct/indirect reports in excess of 10 people preferred.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to lead and develop a management team while establishing and executing goals and strategies for the department.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience in the oil and gas industry preferred.
