Requirements
  • A high school diploma, General Educational Development certificate, or 10 years of work experience is required.
  • One year of health care experience is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • The employee must maintain a constant state of alertness and work safely.
  • The employee must be able to perform the stated physical requirements, including standing and walking, lifting and carrying objects, reaching, gripping, keyboard use and data entry, patient movement, and occasional driving.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for eye examinations and procedures.
  • Perform preliminary vision tests, including visual acuity, tonometry, refraction, color vision testing, lensometry, keratometry, pupil-function testing, automated perimetry, extra-ocular muscle evaluation, and confrontation visual-field testing.
  • Assist with diagnostic imaging such as optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and visual-field testing.
  • Assist eye-care providers in examining and treating patients.
  • Initiate documentation of the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings.
  • Act as a scribe when needed by documenting clinically relevant interactions and dialogue, including history and examination findings, diagnoses, orders, evaluation and management information, follow-up, and patient instructions.
  • Provide patient education under the direction of an eye-care provider.
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures and laser treatments in the office, including applying and removing dressings as directed.
  • Document patient histories and maintain accurate medical records in the electronic medical record system.
  • Educate patients about eye health, medications, and post-procedure care.
  • Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
  • Inventory and maintain surgical instruments in accordance with system and department standards.
  • Complete prescription-refill requests authorized by the provider with full documentation in the patient chart.
  • Screen patients and calls for emergency or urgent situations and obtain pertinent information for the provider.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification within 18 months of hire is preferred.
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting is desirable.
