Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, public administration, or a related field is required.
  • Four years of relevant experience in investment analysis, economic development, venture capital, or related areas is required.
  • Demonstrated strong quantitative, analytical, and financial modeling skills are required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • High attention to detail, organization, and deadline management are required.
  • Experience with Excel, PowerPoint, and data or portfolio management platforms is required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct due diligence and investment analysis for direct and follow-on investment opportunities involving university-affiliated startups and existing portfolio companies, as well as fund and external capital platform opportunities.
  • Review fund reports, manager updates, capital activity, valuation changes, distributions, unfunded exposure, portfolio developments, and prospective fund materials; prepare summaries, dashboards, diligence support, and briefing materials for senior team members, committees, and leadership.
  • Build financial analyses, market research, ownership analyses, fund summaries, exposure analyses, dashboards, and written materials that support investment decisions, participation rights evaluations, fund diligence, external capital discussions, and emerging capital deployment activity.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, financing activity, milestone achievement, external capital raised, valuation changes, capital needs, and other indicators that inform portfolio reporting, impact assessment, and leadership decision-making.
  • Prepare portfolio reports, impact assessments, dashboards, briefing materials, and presentations for leadership, investment, and advisory committee meetings.
  • Translate venture capital, fund investing, startup financing, university innovation, and commercialization trends into insights that support portfolio strategy and the development of Ohio State's innovation investment platform.
  • Map funds, investors, sectors, markets, external capital models, and university-affiliated investment approaches to identify funding trends, market dynamics, portfolio capital needs, and areas of alignment with Ohio State-affiliated startups, portfolio priorities, and fund investment strategy.
  • Maintain investment analysis files, portfolio research, diligence materials, fund reporting inputs, and supporting documentation used for internal decision-making in coordination with other Innovation Investment Management team members.
  • Coordinate with founders, faculty, commercialization teams, portfolio companies, fund managers, and internal stakeholders to gather information, support diligence and reporting needs, and maintain visibility into investment and portfolio activity.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree, such as an MBA or master's degree, is desired.
  • Four to eight years of relevant experience is desired.
  • Experience supporting investment analysis, venture capital, startup finance, fund investing, university commercialization, innovation investment, economic development, or portfolio management activities within a university, public sector, venture, finance, or technology/startup ecosystem is desired.
  • Familiarity with commercialization pathways, early-stage venture investing, fund investing, cap tables, ownership analysis, fund performance metrics, impact assessment, and portfolio reporting is desired.
  • Experience with PitchBook, Carta, Chronograph, Excel dashboards, Power BI, Tableau, Smartsheet, SharePoint, or similar research, reporting, or portfolio systems is desired.
