Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Associate's Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program is required.
  • Registered nurses without a bachelor's degree in nursing or higher must enroll in an appropriate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and complete it within seven years of starting.
  • Current or compact registered nurse licensure in North Carolina is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Registered nurses must meet the criteria of the DUHS Nurse Residency Program when applicable to advance to Nurse Clinician II.
  • Knowledge of registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and nursing assistant scope of practice is required.
  • Knowledge and appropriate application of the nursing process are required.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and procedures is required.
  • Ability to assess the nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families is required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team members, physicians, administrators, and leadership is required.
  • Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care is required.
  • Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up is required.
  • Ability to use fine motor skills and withstand prolonged standing and walking is required.
  • Ability to document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations, and patient-status re-evaluations using computer or paper documentation tools is required.
  • Ability to use computers and learn new software programs is required.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for administering routine and special patient treatments is required.
  • Working knowledge of infection-control procedures and safety precautions is required.
  • Working knowledge and completion of Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements are required.
  • Pre-employment physical capacity testing is required.
Responsibilities
  • Independently plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Plan, provide, and document professional nursing care using the nursing process under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in delivering patient care.
  • Participate in maintaining the environment of care, including equipment and material resources.
  • Prioritize work organization and identify resources to complete components of care promptly.
  • Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs, and seek appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Identify clinical or operational performance-improvement opportunities and assist with performance-improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the described work.
