Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in a Residential Counselor role.
  • A demonstrated track record as an exceptional performer and team player in a Residential Counselor role.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid driver's license presented at employment, with at least six months of valid U.S. driving history, adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle, a safe driving record, and successful completion of a driver's screening background check.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, sit, reach, climb stairs, and maneuver through narrow spaces or hallways.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques or a two-person lift.
  • Ability to operate a computer and office equipment such as a calculator, copier, and printer.
  • Ability to assist clients with tasks of daily living.
  • Ability to speak, hear, and communicate with clients, staff, and external representatives.
  • Ability to meet the specified close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision requirements and adjust focus.
  • CPR certification within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification within two weeks of hire.
  • Medication Administration Certification following Connecticut guidelines.
  • Safety-Care certification within two weeks of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and documenting treatment, including individual service plans, individual plans, and clinical programs.
  • Provide training and support to persons served, including rehabilitative and behavioral interventions, monitoring, fire and safety regulations, appointment scheduling, money management, activities of daily living, grocery shopping, meal planning and cooking, household chores, and related activities.
  • Perform hands-on program tasks as needed to implement support plans.
  • Assist individuals with community integration, community-based support, and resource services.
  • Plan recreational and social activities that promote emotional well-being and quality of life, including celebrations, outings, community travel, church activities, decorating, and shopping.
  • Provide transportation as necessary.
  • Assess residents’ physical and emotional status and report changes to a supervisor.
  • Monitor residents’ funds as needed.
  • Maintain records, collect behavioral and academic data, maintain progress notes, enter information into an electronic health record, and document incidents, programs, and routine activities in communication logs.
  • Store, administer, document, and dispose of medication consistently with Medication Administration Certification requirements, funding-source regulations, and company policy.
  • Communicate with and provide information to program nurses, funding agencies, case managers, other service providers, Visiting Nurses Association nurses, and physicians.
  • Participate in mandated training and staff meetings as directed by the manager.
  • Assist with orientation of new staff and ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure program-site safety and maintenance, including housekeeping, lawn mowing, snow shoveling, and garbage removal.
  • Comply with corporate and divisional policies and procedures, including safe work practices, workers’ compensation, universal precautions, and exposure control.
  • Complete paperwork, logs, and online data records, including communication logs, community membership logs, chore schedules, timesheets, and application forms.
  • Ensure the required staff-to-consumer ratio is maintained and provide last-minute coverage as required.
  • Function as a human rights advocate, provide physical intervention or first aid during behavioral or medical emergencies, and report to the Disabled Persons Protection Commission.
  • Maintain required certifications, review and respond to work emails, follow administrative policies, and perform other related duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience may substitute for academic training in some cases.
