Requirements
  • High school graduation or a GED certificate.
  • Graduation from a technical school as a Medical Assistant or equivalent.
  • CPR certification must be obtained within the first 6 months of hire and maintained.
  • Knowledge of patient interviewing techniques, basic medical terminology, vital signs and abnormal values, patient charting, exam-room maintenance, provider orders, medication administration, basic laboratory procedures, electrocardiograms, OSHA guidelines, blood-borne pathogens, universal precautions, eye examinations, autoclave use, insurance, coding and billing terminology, medical instruments, sterilization procedures, injections, medications, specimen collection, urinalysis, ECG procedures, accreditation requirements, and compliance programs.
  • Ability to obtain and interpret vital signs, height, weight, temperatures, and throat-culture swabs; use medical equipment, office machines, telephones, computers, and patient-data systems; follow provider instructions; maintain confidentiality; and communicate clearly with patients and families.
  • Ability to work within established deadlines and provide care to geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn patients.
Responsibilities
  • Use the practice management program to register, schedule, and verify appointments.
  • Review the next day's schedule and prepare for patient visits.
  • Verify patient insurance, explain fee schedules, and collect required copayments.
  • Receive and greet patients and visitors and assist patients into examination rooms.
  • Collect laboratory results, outside records, and paperwork needed for visits.
  • Print labels, prepare encounter forms and charting notes, schedule referral appointments, and mail results.
  • Interview patients, record the reason for visits and health problems, and obtain medical histories while differentiating subjective and objective information.
  • Obtain patients' vital signs and report abnormal readings to providers.
  • Follow universal precautions and maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Complete laboratory requisitions and label specimens for in-house and send-out laboratories.
  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures, perform visual exams, and perform electrocardiograms.
  • Prepare, clean, and sanitize examination rooms and maintain them with required forms and supplies.
  • Clean, wrap, and label instruments for autoclaving.
  • Explain discharge plans to patients.
  • Administer medications through inhalation, ears, eyes, orally, and by injection after required training and provider or licensed-health-professional sign-off.
  • Perform subcutaneous and intramuscular immunizations after completing the required class and receiving observation and sign-off.
  • Perform in-house tests including streptococcal tests, blood glucose, hematocrit, urinalysis, pregnancy tests, hemoglobin A1C, and urine drug screens.
  • Serve as an interpreter when appropriate and perform other assigned duties.
  • Travel throughout the Albuquerque metropolitan area as required and work the regularly scheduled Monday-Friday schedule, with possible weekend work.
