Requirements
- For the Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, a high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
- For the Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, on-the-job training is provided.
- For the Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification is required within 12 months of hire.
- For the Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, Basic Life Support certification is required within two weeks of hire.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, a minimum of one year of ophthalmic experience and completion of a certified assistant program or equivalent are required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification is required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant level, Basic Life Support certification is required within two weeks of hire.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Technician level, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Technician level, a minimum of two years of specialized ophthalmic experience and completion of a certified technician program are required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Technician level, JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Technician certification is required.
- For the Certified Ophthalmic Technician level, Basic Life Support certification is required within two weeks of hire.
Responsibilities
- Perform general patient care activities and ophthalmic diagnostic tests.
- Assist ophthalmologists during clinical examinations.
- Prepare patients for visits and collect medical histories.
- Perform basic vision screenings and support administrative and procedural clinical tasks.
- Perform advanced medical history intake and ophthalmic diagnostic tests including visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, and basic slit-lamp examinations.
- Administer dilation drops and assist with minor in-office procedures.
- Document clinical findings in patient medical records.
- Prepare examination rooms, maintain equipment and instruments, and follow infection control and sterilization protocols.
- Provide patient support and help manage clinical communication.
- Perform Certified Ophthalmic Assistant-level functions with increased autonomy and technical proficiency.
- Conduct complex diagnostic testing and operate advanced ophthalmic instruments.
- Assist with intravitreal injections and post-operative care when applicable.
- Lead clinical workflow and mentor entry-level staff.
- Ensure high standards of patient care and clinic readiness.
- Serve as a liaison between ophthalmologists and patients to improve clinic efficiency and patient experience.
