CyrusOne gets go-ahead for data center in Sangamon, Illinois.

CyrusOne gets go-ahead for data center in Sangamon, Illinois. Will offer up to 634MW of capacity at buildout April 09, 2026 CyrusOne has got the go-ahead to build a data center in Sangamon, Illinois. Sangamon County Board members voted on Tuesday to allow the construction of a $500m, 280-acre, four-building data center at the 13000 Block of Thayer Road, Waverly. - Sangamon County CyrusOne has stated that the campus will use up to 634MW of capacity at full buildout, use a closed-loop cooling technology, and generate a property tax revenue of around $100 million over a 20-year period. This is a victory for the data center developer, who applied for planning permission last October. A substantial number of local residents came out in opposition to the proposal, citing concerns about the data center's environmental impact, proximity to residential neighborhoods, and the procedural manner of the planning process. But CyrusOne officials were questioned as to whether they had requested local unions sign up early for the meeting's public comment session in order to try to take the opposition's spots in the order, according to the Illinois Times. This was because of a leaked email attributed to David Wells, the Business Manager and Financial Secretary of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, who said that "the CyrusOne folks have asked us to sign up early for this to try and take the opposition's spots in the order. That being said, hopefully none of us will have to speak," reads the email. "Once again, please show up in force... We all need this project." CyrusOne, which is jointly owned by private equity firms KKR and Global Infrastructure Partners, operates more than 50 data centers across the US and Europe. It operates two other data centers in Illinois, located in Aurora and Lombard, the former of which experienced a shutdown last November that temporarily prevented traders from accessing services provided by CME Group, one of the world's largest derivatives exchanges. Sangamon County is located in central Illinois and includes the city of Springfield. Most of Illinois' data centers are clustered in and around Chicago. More in north america.

CyrusOne breaks ground on first Italian data center outside Milan.

CyrusOne breaks ground on first Italian data center outside Milan. Company starts work on first of two buildings at former nuclear research site March 26, 2026 CyrusOne has broken ground on its first data center in Italy. The company this week announced it has officially broken ground on MIL1 in Milan. - CyrusOne The three-story facility will offer 27MW of IT capacity across 7,000 sqm (75,345 sq ft) of technical space. The company has previously said the first phase will be live by Q3 2027. "Milan is an increasingly important digital infrastructure market for Southern Europe, and this development marks a key milestone in our European growth strategy," said Andreas Paduch, managing director, Europe at CyrusOne. "With MIL1, we are establishing a strong platform in Milan to support our customers' long-term capacity and connectivity needs. This project is only possible through close collaboration with our partners, including the Municipality of Segrate and our wider delivery ecosystem, whose support and expertise are critical to bringing this development to fruition." CyrusOne announced plans for its debut Italian facility in Milan in December 2024, acquiring an 18.5-acre site in the Municipality of Segrate, East Milan. A second building, the 54MW MIL2, is also planned on the site. MIL1 is designed to recover and reuse waste heat, initially for use within ancillary spaces on site, with the potential to supply a district heating network if available. CyrusOne has gifted the Golfo Agricolo, a 700,000 parkland, to the Municipality of Segrate for community use. It is investing some €6 million ($6.94m) in local infrastructure improvements, including the redevelopment of Via delle Regioni into a "modern urban boulevard." "The start of construction on the CyrusOne data center marks a significant step in the development of Segrate and strengthens our city's role as a leading hub for innovation and digital infrastructure," said Paolo Micheli, Mayor of the Municipality of Segrate. "An investment of this magnitude enhances the area, as it finally allows for the regeneration of a vast, problematic industrial area that has been abandoned for decades, replacing it with a prestigious project with a lower environmental impact than previously considered alternatives." The campus is on the former CISE (Centro Informazioni Studi Esperienze) nuclear research site. CISE, founded in 1947, was an R&D center for nuclear power development. Italian energy firm Enel became CISE's majority shareholder in the 1960s. The Segrate site was decommissioned in 2003. CyrusOne acquired the site from Europea2000. KKR-owned CyrusOne has more than 50 data centers across the US and European markets. Across Europe, the company has data centers in operation or development across the major FLAPD markets of London, Dublin, Paris, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, as well as Madrid. US Army taps Carlyle and CyrusOne to develop data centers on army-owned land.

US Army taps Carlyle and CyrusOne to develop data centers on army-owned land. Will develop at sites in Utah and Texas March 26, 2026 The US Army has selected two companies to develop data centers at army bases in the US. Global investment firm Carlyle and data center operator CyrusOne will develop data centers at army-owned sites in Texas and Utah. Carlyle will develop a data center project on around 1,384 acres at Fort Bliss in Texas, while KKR and BlackRock-owned CyrusOne will develop 1,201 acres at the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. According to the US Army, the companies were conditionally chosen through a "rigorous and competitive process" and will be responsible for the financing, building, operating, maintaining, and decommissioning of the data centers. There will be no upfront cost to taxpayers related to the projects. "AI is a strategic asset for the army," said Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll. "It is a force multiplier, supports future transformation and requirements, keeps the army ahead of our adversaries, and generates resiliency across the force. These data centers are a critical resource to support that strategic imperative." "By partnering with the private sector to develop cutting-edge data centers on our installations, we are bolstering our national security, driving technological innovation, and building a more resilient and modern army," added David R. Fitzgerald, Deputy Undersecretary of the Army. "Our new data center initiatives made possible by enhanced use leasing, are a direct investment in army priorities." The projects are part of the White House's 2025 executive order on Accelerating Federal Permitting of Data Center Infrastructure, which enables military departments to lease out their non-excess property. According to the US Army, the deal is not yet final, and is in an exclusive negotiation period to finalize the leases and other terms. The current timelines for the site suggest that the Carlyle site could be operational in 2027, and the CyrusOne site in 2029. "We are pleased to have been selected to enter exclusive negotiations with the US Army on this initiative to advance next-generation digital infrastructure. With deep roots in Washington, DC, Carlyle brings experience at the intersection of government and industry, along with a strong track record investing in and building large-scale energy and digital infrastructure, said Ferris Hussein, partner, global infrastructure at Carlyle. Fort Bliss is located in El Paso, Texas. The army base spans some 4,400 sq km (1,699 square miles). Carlyle is an investment company, and counts Edge data center firm Armada and Nxtra by Airtel among its portfolio companies. Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne, said: "We are honored to be selected by the US Army to enter exclusive negotiations for the Dugway project. This represents a unique opportunity to support the army's modernization objectives through a long-term, commercially driven development. We look forward to working collaboratively with the army as this initiative progresses." CyrusOne operates numerous data centers across the US, including in Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. The Dugway Proving Ground would be the company's first in Utah. The base is located southwest of Salt Lake City, and spans some 6,796 sq km (2,634 square miles). The Accelerating Federal Permitting of Data Center Infrastructure executive order was issued in 2025 and requires data center projects to have at least $500 million in capital expenditure and offer more than 100MW in capacity. The US Air Force has also put forward locations for proposals. In October 2025, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) calling for companies to build and manage a data center at the Savannah River Site, a former nuclear materials facility in South Carolina. Two days before that, the DOE issued another RFP for a data center to be built in the 33,508-acre Oak Ridge Reservation. More in construction & site selection.
