Requirements
  • An Associate of Science in Zoo Animal Technology or a related degree, with at least two years of experience working in a public presentation setting, school, zoological park, aquarium, museum, or nature preserve, or a combination of education and experience equal to four years.
  • Ability to work on weekend days, college breaks, and holidays.
  • Ability to work successfully in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, diplomatically, empathetically, and tactfully using the preferred method and level applicable to the job.
  • Ability to make well-reasoned, sensible, and timely decisions based on careful, objective review and informed analysis.
  • Ability to respond promptly and courteously to questions from students and faculty, including students with little or no computer skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, civility, and a high degree of ethics in job-related actions.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and organize job-related tasks within or ahead of established time frames.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with students in the Zoo Animal Technology Program and Zoo Education Assistant Work Study by providing thorough instructions and thoughtful feedback.
  • Work closely with animals in the ambassador program and assist with maintaining trained behaviors used for educational experiences.
  • Present education programs and conduct tabling for off-campus outreach at community venues.
  • Give virtual presentations to schools, libraries, assisted living facilities, and other audiences.
  • Create lesson plans, activities, and other content for educational programs.
  • Assist with planning events such as Party for the Planet, Zookeeper Day, and World Tree Kangaroo Day.
  • Facilitate animal encounters with the public.
  • Assist the Conservation Education Curator in creating and building graphics and interactive displays.
  • Facilitate birthday parties for the public on weekends or as needed.
  • Keep records of operating procedures and share position-specific knowledge, including use of the collegewide enterprise resource planning system and related processes, by providing guidance on standard operations and departmental procedures.
  • Comply with College rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws and regulations governing public employees, including document retention and destruction, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Protect the privacy, security, and confidentiality of records and sensitive information according to applicable state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide courteous, informed, accessible, and professional service engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least two years of animal handling and/or animal training experience.
