Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of relevant or professional experience within the industry.
  • Ability to work non-traditional schedules, including nights and weekends, and adjust shifts with semester changes.
  • Completion of university-required staff trainings and necessary COFs for all Making Center facilities within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Advanced knowledge of sound practices and familiarity with equipment and software used in current sound design practices, including studio-based and experimental processes, digital input/output, and industry-standard software applications.
  • Experience maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting equipment and tools.
  • Full technical knowledge of sound-based analog and digital technologies, including monitors, microphones, control panels, preamps, mixers, media players, Mac minis, tablets, and other smart devices.
  • Understanding of cross-platform Windows and macOS environments, large-scale hardware and software deployment, network systems, and color calibration and profiling.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Pro Tools, Avid, and Google Docs.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, close attention to detail, and organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and supporting students working in an interdisciplinary manner from concept to fabrication.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and processes related to Parsons Making Center initiatives.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment and uphold a respectful shop culture for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Sound Office and its sound, video, and related equipment resources for on- and off-campus checkout.
  • Manage full-time technicians and student workers, including interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, accountability tracking, task assignment, team and one-on-one meetings, and emergency coverage coordination.
  • Manage a fixed budget by tracking, planning, and prioritizing expenses related to inventories, schedules, projects, and repairs.
  • Assist with facility improvement projects, shows and installations, and special initiatives.
  • Recommend hardware and software purchases related to the curriculum.
  • Maintain policies and systems for checkout, satellite store operations, scheduling, record keeping, and inventories; generate and evaluate usage data and statistics and update systems as needed.
  • Organize facility calendars and communications, including website updates, shop signage, safety orientations, technical and instructional documentation, workshops, class demonstrations, deliveries, special events, and modified holiday hours.
  • Work across Making Center systems to streamline efficiency and communication.
  • Facilitate equipment repair and maintenance, including in-house repairs and coordination with external vendors.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment, adjust approach, and prioritize competing demands.
  • Provide customer service and maintain professional interactions with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment with productive workplace relationships.
  • Stay current with relevant technology and developments in the field.
  • Attend scheduled Making Center staff meetings and perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
