Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers is required for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania is required for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- A Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is required for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine is required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- At least three years of experience in Hospitalist Medicine or as an Advanced Practice Professional is required.
- The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing more than 40 pounds.
- The employee must work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, work around biohazards and infectious diseases, work with or near deceased persons, work with hands in water, and work around electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- Strong communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
- Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and hospital privileges, where applicable.
- Manage hospitalist inpatient Advanced Practice Professional personnel to ensure an appropriately credentialed, clinically competent, and cohesive workforce, and navigate credentialing, privileging, and facility directives to ensure adherence to local policies.
- Promote cooperative problem solving, positive progressive discipline, individual and group goal orientation, appropriate delegation of section duties and activities, and team cohesion through coaching, counseling, meeting attendance, performance appraisals, and participation in section activities.
- Assist in developing and implementing educational programs for professional and support staff, including new employee orientation, continuing education, procedural training, and new equipment or systems training.
- Manage inpatient Advanced Practice Professionals to ensure adequate coverage in inpatient settings.
- Maintain effective communication with medical staff, patients, staff, and other departments to identify problems and support problem resolution.
- Communicate with Advanced Practice Professionals, physicians, nurses, and other personnel to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
- Work with the Hospitalist Medical Director to disseminate necessary information in writing or verbally.
- Work with leadership staff, Advanced Practice Professionals, and physicians to identify opportunities for improved efficiency and quality care delivery through the Performance Improvement process.
- Communicate employee concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate care delivery in accordance with Standards of Practice and Standards of Care.
- Collaborate with the Hospitalist Medical Director to ensure Advanced Practice Professional care is consistent with local and regional medical staff procedures.
- Facilitate personnel professional development and oversee and participate in staff orientation, training, and continuing education.
- Assist the Hospitalist Medical Director with hiring Advanced Practice Professional vacancies within the hospitalist section and assist in evaluating new employees.
- Maintain personal and professional growth through workshops, seminars, in-service presentations, and monitoring staff orientation plans.
- Identify current and anticipated section and departmental educational needs, collaborate on the departmental education plan, evaluate its outcomes, and facilitate staff participation.
- Improve and maintain personal management skills through seminars, workshops, classes, and literature review.
- Participate in research and quality initiatives.
- Travel to regional sites as needed.
- Perform other duties assigned by department or hospital leadership.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioners or Family Nurse Practitioners are preferred.
- A Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
