Requirements
  • A Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Five years of combined clinical nursing experience, with combined education and experience permitted as a substitute for the minimum experience.
  • If the candidate has less than two years or 2,000 hours of clinical experience, Schedule II controlled substances may not be prescribed without a protocol approved by a collaborating physician.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and the ability to understand, follow, and successfully perform the duties.
  • A current Registered Nurse license from the applicable state nursing board.
  • A current Nurse Practitioner license from the applicable state nursing board.
  • A current Nurse Practitioner Furnisher license to furnish medications in California, or the applicable Nevada licensing credentials for the Las Vegas position.
  • An unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration certificate with a Nevada address for the Las Vegas position.
  • National Board Certification in the Nurse Practitioner area of specialty accredited by the Accreditation Board of Specialty Nursing or the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Nevada applicants must hold an approved Nurse Practitioner specialty certification, such as Acute Care, Adult Medicine, Family Medicine, or Gerontology.
  • Nevada applicants must hold a valid Nevada Board of Pharmacy certificate and a valid Nevada State Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license.
  • Nevada applicants must obtain USC credentialing from the governing board within six months of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required for hospital, acute-care, and ambulatory infusion-center settings.
  • Fire Life Safety Training is required within Los Angeles City when applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Perform physical examinations, collect and document patient data, conduct approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribe appropriate interventions and medications, and provide direct patient care according to evidence-based clinical practice standards.
  • Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations, document pertinent normal and abnormal findings, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, and perform procedures within the specialty area.
  • Facilitate safe and efficient operational flow of patients through the continuum of care.
  • Communicate, plan, and implement care with physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advanced practice providers.
  • Manage the clinical aspects of the clinic, patient rounding and care, nursing performance improvement, job performance and competency evaluations, staffing, scheduling, and the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care, support systems, research, education, and professional leadership.
  • Retain responsibility for ongoing clinical management of patients while collaborating with healthcare team members and consulting and referring as appropriate.
  • Conduct in-depth patient and family interviews, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patients' interpretations of their health needs.
  • Identify and treat patients' diseases and manage treatment of hospitalized patients.
  • Perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret the results.
  • Develop and implement long- and short-range treatment plans.
  • Obtain specimens and perform injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of conditions caused by trauma or infection.
  • Write orders to increase, decrease, or change medications, subject to physician checking and countersigning.
  • Initiate consultations and monitor patient scheduling for special tests.
  • Maintain pertinent patient progress records, update and summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of changes in patient condition.
  • Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical and psychological problems, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Act as a liaison with governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
  • Assist with medical research projects in accordance with research protocols and obtain Institutional Review Board approval for treatment protocols.
  • Research community resources and refer patients to appropriate resources based on their medical needs and condition.
  • Maintain compliance with university and department policies and procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection-control requirements, and accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in in-service education programs and professional associations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
