Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • An associate degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Health Care Administration is required for the business and accounting process knowledge.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a medical office setting is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience with HMO/PPO, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payment requirements and systems is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience with accounting and bookkeeping procedures is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience with medical terminology is required.
  • The ability to work under pressure and meet hard deadlines is required.
  • Experience using computer systems, software, and calculators is required.
  • Effective communication abilities for phone contacts with insurance payers to resolve issues are required.
  • Customer service skills for interacting with patients about medical claims and payments, including communication with patients and family members of diverse ages and backgrounds, are required.
  • The ability to work in a team environment is required.
  • Problem-solving skills to research and resolve discrepancies, denials, appeals, and collections are required.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States is required.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen is required.
Responsibilities
  • Work aged receivable reports, identify errors, work claims, contact insurance companies when necessary, and post adjustments and payments.
  • Work the overpayment report by identifying refunds due to patients or insurance companies and processing refund requests.
  • Research and appeal denied claims.
  • Rebill services provided to nursing home patients, including dental, podiatry, audiology, and optometry services.
  • Use and maintain the electronic medical record system.
  • Post procedures, modifiers, and diagnosis codes; verify their accuracy; verify insurance information; submit claims to insurance companies; and work weekly reports for missing provider charges.
  • Answer incoming calls from facilities, patients, patients' family members, and field staff regarding account inquiries.
  • Maintain and enhance knowledge through self-directed education, staff instruction, and computer-based training modules.
  • Mail correspondence and claims as needed on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Check eligibility and verify benefits.
  • Review patient bills for accuracy and completeness and obtain missing information.
  • Prepare, review, and transmit claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing.
  • Follow up on unpaid claims within standard billing-cycle time frames using prescribed methods.
  • Update the cash spreadsheet.
  • Process at least 450 encounters per week.
  • Support and comply with all components of the compliance program, including completing training and reporting suspected violations of law and company policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and comply with HIPAA and protected health information guidelines.
  • Respond positively to change and perform other assigned duties.
