Responsibilities
  • Receive, prioritize, accession, and distribute clinical specimens to appropriate laboratory sections to meet department-designated turnaround times.
  • Process specimens appropriately to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Enter and edit patient demographics in laboratory and hospital computer systems.
  • Serve as a resource to physicians, nurses, and other laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling and processing.
  • Receive specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations via couriers or pneumatic tube stations.
  • Use knowledge of the test menu to prioritize stat or urgent specimens and specimens requiring special handling.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure specimen integrity whenever testing may be delayed.
  • Track and receive batches, verifying receipt of specimens.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to specialized testing areas, including specialty and reference laboratories.
  • Manage the sample archive storage system and specimen disposal according to laboratory storage guidelines.
  • Register patient information in the Hospital Information System.
  • Identify special registration types, including client billing and research.
  • Identify and register patient billing information.
  • Log in laboratory procedure codes from manual requisitions or verify the accuracy of electronic orders.
  • Enter appropriate comments from requisitions and physician orders.
  • Document discrepancies involving patient information, requested tests, or specimen information in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide routine information about test results, testing and specimen requirements, technical information, reference ranges, turnaround times, referral laboratory information, and general products or services.
  • Answer questions from specimen collection locations about transport and minimum volumes.
  • Inform ordering providers when ordered tests cannot be performed and work to remedy the situation whenever possible.
  • Take appropriate action to meet customer requests, including test add-ons and proper call transfers.
  • Scan requisitions into the scanning system and confirm readability and keywords.
  • Participate in quality assurance data collection as required.
  • Assist technologists with pre-analytical processing of select tests, including centrifuging, separating, and storing samples.
  • Work with healthcare providers to troubleshoot problem specimens and clarify correct test selection.
  • Load the continuous blood culture system or pre-analytical automation system for sample processing and preparation when applicable.
  • Take temperatures and monitor room and equipment environments, including carbon dioxide and humidity.
  • Work with the technical team and supervisors to troubleshoot out-of-range conditions and document results according to laboratory quality control guidelines.
  • Perform other assigned responsibilities and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Customer service experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology is a plus.
