Requirements
  • Use advanced shop mathematics and complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, and adjustable measuring instruments.
  • Complete an accredited, indentured apprenticeship or have a high school education plus two years of technical college education.
  • Have 2 to 3 years of effective experience.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and successfully complete a motor vehicle records check.
  • Successfully complete required background checks and be able to obtain a government security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Service, maintain, inspect, repair, install, and replace electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems associated with commercial and domestic air-conditioning, heating, ventilation, humidification, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Service, maintain, operate, repair, and replace electrical, pneumatic, electronic, thermostatic, pressure, flow-switching, and level controls and devices for building systems.
  • Use visual checks or computers to monitor and control HVAC systems.
  • Maintain proper temperatures and water, steam, or air flows and pressure in air-conditioning, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems.
  • Maintain logs and records required for refrigerant handling and ensure proper amounts of gas and cooling agents are maintained.
  • Maintain, repair, and install electrical circuits and equipment, including lighting, power systems, distribution panels, generators, motors, electrical boxes, panels, switches, outlets, fixtures, hot water heaters, electrical heating units, and laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain and repair floor-maintenance equipment, power hand tools, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Climb poles or use boom trucks for installation and maintenance of lighting systems.
  • Test and maintain fire-alarm and emergency-light systems.
  • Install conduit, make bends, and thread and cut electrical conduits and raceways, including PVC, metal, rigid conduit, and Wiremold.
  • Perform piping and plumbing installations for laboratory equipment, restroom fixtures, and building plumbing systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing and piping materials and components, including glass, Dura-Iron, PVC, copper, steel, and cast iron.
  • Service, maintain, and repair well-treatment and purification systems.
  • Operate hand and power tools to cut, thread, bend, and join pipe.
  • Lubricate machinery and motors on a prescribed schedule and organize and carry out preventive-maintenance programs as directed.
  • Read and interpret HVAC, electrical, and plumbing schematics, blueprints, drawings, manufacturers' manuals, and technical sheets.
  • Make corrections to drawings and maps as required.
  • Plan and lay out work in the proper sequence while assuring quality work.
  • Determine material and labor requirements.
  • Order material from approved vendors.
  • Safeguard electrical, HVAC, and plumbing services and equipment to protect people and prevent damage to systems and equipment.
  • Detect unusual conditions or defective materials and report them to a supervisor.
  • Perform ordinary carpentry work on buildings, including stairs, floors, woodwork, doors, and furniture.
  • Replace floor and ceiling tile, window glass, moldings, and related components.
  • Perform interior and exterior maintenance painting and routine roofing repairs.
  • Answer questions for or direct the work of full-time or part-time employees as required.
  • Work with customers to obtain job details, make minor adjustments to work specifications, and refer problems to a supervisor.
  • Operate University vehicles, including trucks and snow-removal equipment.
  • Answer emergency calls and perform maintenance-program work.
