Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional battery-modeling experience, or a PhD plus 2 years, with a focus on electrochemical modeling
  • Deep knowledge of cell electrochemistry, heat transfer, thermodynamics, electrical circuits, numerical methods, and optimization
  • Hands-on experience with SPM, SPMe, P2D, equivalent-circuit models, and battery degradation mechanisms
  • Experience planning, running, or interpreting battery characterization and validation testing, including EIS, HPPC, OCV, and aging studies
  • Proficiency in at least one of MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++, or Rust
  • Ability to communicate complex model behavior and datasets clearly and work closely with mechanical, electrical, test, and systems-modeling engineers
Responsibilities
  • Own cell-level models across electrochemical and equivalent-circuit fidelities to evaluate performance, fast charging capability, degradation, and lifetime
  • Define Zipline’s cell electrochemistry roadmap and lead cell benchmarking and selection with internal teams and cell vendors
  • Design and analyze characterization and validation campaigns, including EIS, HPPC, OCV, and cycle and calendar aging studies
  • Develop pack-level electro-thermal models that predict electrical and thermal non-uniformity during high-power operation and charging
  • Build state-estimation and controls-oriented algorithms for SOC, SOH, SOE, SOP, and aging-aware charging-current limits
  • Integrate validated battery and energy models into simulation and operational software that informs fleet charging, turnaround, battery-health, and aircraft-energy decisions
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Computational Science, or related field
  • Familiarity with PyBaMM or similar electrochemical battery modeling frameworks
  • Experience with battery degradation and lifetime modeling
  • Experience developing battery state estimation algorithms

Zipline designs, builds, and operates autonomous delivery networks using two drone platforms: P1 fixed-wing drones for long-range, centralized deliveries with parachute drops, and P2 hover-drones for precise home deliveries. It provides end-to-end service, from drones and hubs to software and logistics, under government and enterprise contracts, earning revenue per delivery or per distribution center. The system enables zero-emission, instant logistics for medical supplies and consumer goods across multiple countries, with partners like Walmart and GNC. The goal is fast, reliable, scalable delivery that expands access to essential items, especially healthcare, through a fully integrated global network.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • US marketplace grew 13X in H1 2026 with launches in Cleveland and Austin ahead[1].
  • FAA Part 135 and BVLOS exemptions without ground observers enable scalable US urban operations since 2022[1][6].
  • New partnerships with Wonder, Chipotle, and Taco Bueno drive rapid consumer market expansion in Texas[3][5].

What critics are saying

  • Amazon Prime Air scales 10X more delivery points by 2027, undercutting Zipline's per-delivery fees with $15B network.
  • FAA revokes BVLOS exemption after safety incidents, blocking 90% of US urban operations overnight within 12–24 months.
  • Chipotle and Walmart launch in-house drone fleets by 2027, eliminating Zipline's $200M+ food and retail service contracts.

What makes Zipline unique

  • Zipline operates the world's largest autonomous delivery system with 130 million autonomous miles flown[10].
  • Vertically integrated model controls drone design, manufacturing, and distribution hub operations for rapid iteration.
  • Dual-platform strategy enables 75-mile medical deliveries via P1 and precise home deliveries via P2 since 2025[1][14].

Zipline raises $600M at $7.6B valuation, surpasses 2M deliveries and expands to Houston and Phoenix

Zipline, an American robotics company operating the world's largest autonomous delivery system, has raised over $600 million and is now valued at $7.6 billion. The company has surpassed two million commercial deliveries and will expand to Houston and Phoenix in early 2026, with additional metros following later in the year. Zipline's US deliveries have grown approximately 15% week-over-week for seven months. The service delivers food, retail and healthcare products in as little as 10 minutes, with a median flight time of three minutes. New sites now reach 100 deliveries per day in just two days, compared to 10 weeks for the company's first Dallas location. The company exceeded its Q3 daily delivery volume target by 30% and reached its Q4 target six weeks early.
