Requirements
  • Completion of Carpenter Trade Certification with Red Seal from a recognized institution.
  • Recent five years of commercial building experience.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including smartphones, internet, email, word processing, online forms, and electronic timesheets.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to deal with the public and building tenants courteously and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work responsibly alone under minimal supervision and work well within a team of employees.
  • Ability to be in good physical condition, stand for long periods, and perform bending and reaching motions; the position includes lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate table saws, planers, band saws, routers, mitre saws, small maintenance equipment, and hand tools efficiently and responsibly in accordance with recognized procedures.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's licence registered in Alberta or Saskatchewan with an acceptable driver's abstract.
  • Ability to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business purposes when required.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check and RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance.
  • Proof of qualifications must be provided by the successful applicant.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on buildings and facilities, including carpentry.
  • Complete building renovation work, including framing, boarding, mudding, taping, sanding and painting, door installation, trim work, cabinet work, railings, and window installation.
  • Construct, erect, install, maintain, and repair structures made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel, and other materials.
  • Inspect exterior building envelopes and roofs for signs of failure and rectify issues or report them to the Supervisor.
  • Repair, inspect, and adjust door locks, closers, and panic hardware associated with doors.
  • Perform weekly and yearly maintenance on departmental equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements.
  • Prepare layouts in conformance with building codes using measuring tools.
  • Use scissor lifts, boom lifts, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Document activities, keep legible records, and maintain proper logs.
  • Conduct general internal and external building and safety checks.
  • Maintain the exterior and interior of buildings.
  • Store materials safely and orderly.
  • Maintain, clean, and organize job-related tools.
  • Assist and organize other staff and contractors when required.
  • Ensure contractual work is completed to required standards and regulations.
  • Report issues and concerns involving equipment, safety, facilities, vandalism, and procedures.
  • Assist customers and tenants with matters related to carpentry.
  • Provide assistance and recommendations to management on future projects.
  • Use experience and education to help coworkers and others develop.
  • Respond to emergency situations efficiently and professionally.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Previous building maintenance experience is preferred.
