Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • Progressive accounting and finance experience with a significant focus on real estate is required.
  • The ability to quickly analyze and resolve complex accounting and system issues is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles is required.
  • A robust command of financial and operational systems, including Yardi, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in data management, systems implementation, financial analysis, and business process redesign is required.
  • Strong critical thinking skills are required, including analyzing complex information, identifying patterns and issues, and proposing practical, evidence-based solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills, is required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, active listening, rapport-building, clear feedback and direction, effective delegation, and proactive handling of performance and operational challenges are required.
  • The ability to lead change and innovation is required.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and be accountable for a team of operational accounting professionals, including hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, workload allocation, engagement, coaching, and feedback.
  • Identify skills gaps, create targeted learning opportunities, and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to develop technical, analytical, and leadership capabilities across the team.
  • Serve as an accounting subject matter expert on key financial systems such as Yardi, partnering with accounting leadership, Harvard Campus Services HUIT, and business units to shape system strategy, optimize functionality, resolve system-related accounting issues, and build team redundancy and cross-functional expertise.
  • Manage technology and automation strategies to enhance accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and support system integrations and workflow improvements.
  • Provide leadership for User Acceptance Testing and system implementations, collaborating with accounting leadership, Harvard Campus Services HUIT, and business units to resolve issues, mitigate risk, and ensure effective adoption and ongoing optimization.
  • Manage and actively participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close for a large, diverse real estate portfolio with significant assets and liabilities using University and Campus Services financial systems.
  • Manage and independently perform complex accounting reconciliations and analysis, document work appropriately, identify variances, reconcile balances, and resolve accounting issues.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the billing cycle are completed accurately and on time in collaboration with Campus Services and university colleagues.
  • Oversee and contribute to daily accounting activities to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with policies and internal controls while maintaining responsive customer service.
  • Manage the operational accounting journal-entry process by reviewing journal entries and preparing and processing entries as needed.
  • Develop, review, test, and maintain Campus Services accounting policies, processes, and procedures, including integration of business applications with university enterprise systems.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve accounting practices and compliance with audit, disclosure, and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze and interpret financial and accounting information to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and professional customer service for customers and the University community.
  • Develop and maintain productive partnerships with colleagues and customers within the Harvard community.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in real estate accounting is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in a property management company, real estate investment trust, or large, diverse institution with a substantial real estate portfolio is preferred.
