Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, economics, business administration, or a closely related field, plus one year of professional accounting or financial statement auditing experience.
  • A master's degree or Certified Public Accountant designation may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.
  • Alternatively, one year with Pima County in an Accountant I – Central Services or related position may satisfy the minimum qualification.
  • Understanding of accounting principles and the ability to analyze and reconcile financial information, including capital asset balances.
  • Experience with capital asset accounting, including recording, tracking, reconciling, and/or reporting capital assets.
  • The position requires in-office work in Tucson, Arizona and cannot be remote.
  • The department cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain and analyze general ledger accounts for accuracy and facilitate the month-end and year-end close.
  • Perform accounting activities related to capital assets, including recording, tracking, reconciling, and analyzing capital asset transactions and balances.
  • Assist with reviewing and reconciling capital asset accounts and ensure transactions are properly recorded in accordance with applicable accounting policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Assess current practices and procedures and propose recommendations for improvements when needed.
  • Ensure proper accounting methods and policies, accuracy, and compliance within the department and the County.
  • Perform ad hoc reports, projects, and other assigned tasks.
  • Review, reconcile, and analyze financial transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance with County policies and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, resolve discrepancies, and ensure proper classification of financial data.
  • Prepare financial schedules, reports, and supporting documentation for audits, grant reporting, and internal use.
  • Analyze financial data and transactions to identify errors, trends, and variances requiring adjustment or correction.
  • Assist in monitoring expenditures, revenues, and budget activity to support financial tracking and compliance.
  • Support grant-related accounting activities, including tracking expenditures and preparing documentation for reporting and audits.
  • Prepare adjusting entries and ensure proper recording of financial transactions in accordance with established procedures.
  • Participate in audit preparation by organizing records, preparing documentation, and responding to audit inquiries.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to departmental staff on accounting processes and financial system usage.
  • Research and resolve moderately complex accounting issues in coordination with senior accounting staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in finance or accounting.
  • A licensed Certified Public Accountant designation.
  • At least two years of experience using Microsoft Excel, specifically pivot tables and formulas.
  • At least two years of experience performing account reconciliations.
  • At least two years of experience preparing financial journal entries.
  • At least two years of experience compiling and analyzing financial data.
  • At least two years of experience in capital asset accounting, including recording, tracking, reconciling, and/or reporting capital assets.
  • At least two years of experience working within a governmental accounting environment.
