Summary
The Department of Fine Arts at Barry University is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Technical Theatre. This position combines academic and practical responsibilities, including teaching two Technical Theatre courses per semester (Fall & Spring) and serving 20 hours per week as the Theatre Lab Technician (Theatre Lab Technician duties defined below). This unique role provides an exciting and creative opportunity for a skilled technical theatre professional to contribute to both the educational and production aspects of the Theatre program.
The Department of Fine Arts is comprised of both the Visual Arts and the Performing Arts, and offers seven comprehensive degree programs: the B.F.A. and B.A. in Art; the B.F.A. and B.A. in Photography; the B.M. and B.A. in Music; and the B.F.A. and B.A. in Theatre. Within each degree program, specializations are offered. These consist of the following: for Art--Graphic Design and Visual Arts; for Photography—Photography; for Music—Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, and Music Education; and for Theatre—Acting, Technical Theatre, and Dance Theatre Production.
In addition, minors are offered in Graphic Design, Visual Art, Photography, Music, Dance, and Theatre. Photography offers a Certificate in Photography, and Music offers an Artist Certificate in Music Performance.

Essential Functions
Faculty Responsibilities (Assistant Professor of Technical Theatre):
The Assistant Professor of Technical Theatre will emphasize the academic and practical study of technical theatre, including but not limited to scenic design, lighting, sound, stagecraft, and production management.
The successful candidate will:
• Teach two undergraduate Technical Theatre courses per semester (see lists below).
• Supervise student lighting design, stage design, and construction for productions.
• Collaborate with faculty on the development, refinement, and implementation of the Technical Theatre curriculum.
• Help ensure that Theatre facilities and equipment are maintained and functional.
• Assist in the growth and recruitment of students into the Technical Theatre program.
Actively contribute to departmental, college, university, and professional service.
Maintain a consistent record of scholarship or creative work in the field.
Provide academic advising and mentorship to Theatre majors, with a focus on students pursuing the Technical Theatre track.

Technical Responsibilities (Theatre Lab Technician – 20 hours/week):
In this capacity, the candidate will:
Design and produce scenic elements and props for a minimum of two mainstage productions per academic year.
Developing a cohesive artistic vision and technical strategy for each production in collaboration with directors and designers.
- Coordinating with faculty, students, and production teams.
- Purchasing materials within a given budget.
- Assisting in the coordination of construction, painting, and installation of scenic and/or prop elements of production.
- Assisting with the strike and auditorium restoration post-production.
- Aid in the maintenance of inventory for tools, scenic materials, props, and stock scenery.
Address a wide range of technical theatre issues, including safety protocols.
Work closely with the Theatre Technical Director and Associate Technical Director to plan and coordinate technical needs for each show.
Collaborate on the training, supervising, and scheduling of work-study and student workers enrolled in Technical Theatre Lab courses (TH 111, TH 211, TH 311) to ensure proper instruction in tool use, shop safety, and set construction techniques.
Qualifications/Requirements
The position requires an MFA in Technical Theatre.
1-3 years of teaching experience.
Candidates given the strongest consideration will have experience teaching Technical Theatre at the college level, across a range of topics, including scenic design, lighting, sound, stagecraft, and production management.
Candidates should also possess interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively within an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
