Requirements
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is required.
- At least two years of Operating Room experience is required.
- A current or compact Registered Nurse license in the State of North Carolina is required.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
- Support patient care and facilitate activities and processes associated with the operating room daily schedule, special equipment, instrumentation, inventory, and preference cards for selected surgical service lines.
- Demonstrate management and clinical skills essential to the smooth and efficient operation of specific service lines.
- Maintain knowledge of regulatory standards and ensure compliance with environment-of-care requirements, health system and hospital policies, and standard operating procedures.
- Supervise Registered Nurses, Surgical Technologists, and ancillary staff in their daily operating room duties, including input into performance evaluations and improvement.
- Maintain equipment and instrumentation in collaboration with the sterile processing department.
- Maintain effective communication with operating room teams to ensure performance against key performance indicators.
- Function as charge nurse when needed.
- Perform circulating nurse and scrub nurse duties as needed to maintain clinical skills and procedural knowledge.
- Assess the daily operating room schedule and ensure that staffing, equipment, instrumentation, vendor needs, and supplies are available for all shifts.
- Confirm that the correct preference card is associated with each scheduled procedure.
- Manage surgeon-specific preference cards, including creating cards for new surgeons and implementing changes identified by surgeons and the operating room team.
- Plan actions needed to maintain smooth daily operating room flow, accounting for emergency cases and barriers in collaboration with the operating room charge nurse.
- Communicate proactively with anesthesiologists and surgeons about delays or situations that may affect case flow.
- Plan and implement education activities for new operating room staff and continuing education and advanced skills training, including training on new equipment and supplies.
- Learn, implement, and teach new technologies and procedures.
- Collaborate with operating room teams to identify and implement innovative models and best practices for quality improvement and cost reduction.
- Collaborate regularly with surgeons on service-line procedure needs, barriers, and changes.
- Collaborate with peers across Duke University Health System operating room platforms to standardize practice.
- Plan and assist with coordinating unit staff schedules.
- Assist the nurse manager of operations with preparing and monitoring service-line budget utilization.
- Collaborate with the manager on issue resolution and workflow-improvement projects throughout the department.
- Collaborate with pharmacy, sterile processing, supply chain, radiology, and other departments to resolve issues and improve departmental workflows.
- Participate with the nurse manager in interviewing and selecting new staff.
- Mentor and monitor preceptors for new employees.
- Provide oversight and support to charge nurses to ensure staffing assignments reflect workload, staff competency, and scope of practice.
- Delegate responsibilities within staff scope of practice and validated competencies to meet shift workload demands.
- Facilitate assignments that support learning for orientees and nurse learners.
- Promote open communication, staff participation in decision-making, conflict resolution, and collegiality among health team members.
- Review and provide appropriate follow-up and communication on safety reporting system submissions related to the team or patients in conjunction with the nurse manager of operations.
- Facilitate and encourage staff participation in departmental and hospital committee and council meetings.
- Attend departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
- Perform other projects and duties as directed by the department manager.
Desired Qualifications
- Clinical expertise in both circulating and scrubbing surgical cases while serving as a knowledgeable clinical resource for the team.
- CNOR certification.
