Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing program.
  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse licensure in the State of Louisiana.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Successful completion of an arrhythmia course within the first six months of employment and annual arrhythmia testing thereafter.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required, available upon hire or obtained within six months of employment.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required, available upon hire or obtained within six months of employment.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to use appropriate discretion when handling confidential material and information.
  • Must be IV certified and willing to perform related tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care services addressing patients’ psychosocial, physical, and general care needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Meet the communication needs of patients and families and communicate changes in patients’ clinical conditions to physicians and team members.
  • Perform head-to-toe assessments and reassessments for pediatric, geriatric, and general patient populations under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Assess and reassess pain, use appropriate pain-management techniques, and educate patients and families about pain management.
  • Perform patient care responsibilities according to age-specific standards of care.
  • Administer medications correctly according to patients’ ages and clinical conditions while following the five medication rights.
  • Revise and evaluate plans of care based on patients’ responses to treatment.
  • Formulate and evaluate teaching plans based on identified patient learning needs, involving families as appropriate.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and perform technical and manual services under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Perform treatments and provide services within the scope of licensure.
  • Address patients’ and families’ psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious or spiritual needs.
  • Involve patients and families in forming plans of care and communicate with Social Services or the Discharge Planner about in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
  • Interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care across the life span.
  • Perform patient care in a manner that optimizes safety and reduces medical or healthcare errors.
  • Use medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Consult other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly with team leaders, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Meet current documentation standards and policies.
  • Respond appropriately to patients in emergency or physically distressful situations.
  • Maintain effective working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  • Operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Perform other duties within the Licensed Practical Nurse scope of practice.
  • Complete annual education requirements, in-services, department training, and required reviews.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements and patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in performance-improvement and continuous-quality-improvement activities.
  • Comply with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicate the hospital’s mission, ethics, goals, and department focus statement.
  • Provide respectful, professional customer service and demonstrate teamwork.
Desired Qualifications
  • Additional languages are preferred.
  • Advanced Adult or Pediatric Life Support certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of six months to one year of work experience is preferred.
