Requirements
  • A Juris Doctor degree and at least two years of licensure to practice law in California.
  • At least two years of experience related to indigent defense and juvenile justice, including bench and jury trial experience; law school clinical experience may be considered.
  • Ability to mentor, supervise, and train law students in an in-house clinical program.
  • Outstanding trial and lawyering skills.
  • Written and oral communication skills, especially when working with large holistic teams.
  • Experience working effectively with diverse and vulnerable client populations and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Professionalism, ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and seek guidance when appropriate.
  • Ability to drive to courts, client homes, schools, and other required locations.
  • Availability for some evening and occasional weekend hours.
Responsibilities
  • Work with the Clinic Director to ensure effective management of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and support fundraising and communications efforts.
  • Supervise clinic students’ work representing clients, including supervising certified law students in court appearances.
  • Prepare certified law students before client and family meetings, meetings with juvenile justice partners, and court appearances.
  • Represent youth in Los Angeles County delinquency courts through client communication, litigation, court hearings, and post-disposition advocacy.
  • Assume full or partial responsibility for representing clinic clients during periods of student absence.
  • Co-teach the required courses of the Juvenile Justice Clinic with the Clinic Director.
  • Work with the Clinic Director to build and foster the clinic’s community relationships.
  • Perform other assigned or requested duties.
