About the Role
iCapital’s rapid expansion in the Canada marketplace creates an opportunity for an experienced and talented tax professional to support its Canada expansion strategy in a newly created role within the Fund Finance Tax Services group. This role, along with team members, will service all Canadian access funds including coordinating with various internal stakeholders and external advisors in ensuring tax compliance are met and effective and efficient structuring are in place for our investors and partners, as well as drive continuous improvement throughout the processes.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee third-party tax preparers and administrators for federal and provincial filings for all Canadian funds, including but not limited to T5013, T3, T5008, indirect taxes, and non-resident withholding obligations.
- Assist in tax due diligence and compliance model setup for Canadian fund launches.
- Manage non-resident withholding obligations for applicable funds, including reviewing applicable tax treaty rates, calculating withholding tax, collaborating with internal teams and external providers to ensure the correct withholding amounts are submitted to the CRA on time, developing processes to track relevant thresholds based on risk levels, resolving investor inquiries as well as CRA audit inquiries and assessments, and implementing documentation processes as needed.
- Oversee annual indirect tax filings and investor outreach.
- Provide timely analysis and high-quality responses on investor tax inquiries.
- Manage external service providers and various tax projects as required.
- Coordinate with external financial statement auditors and manage and review tax assessments and tax audit matters related to the funds.
- Review and maintain investor demographics and tax documentation to support accurate tax treatment and resolve data discrepancies.
- Analyze and monitor changes in legislation impacting iCapital, leading communication and projects arising from these changes.
- Conduct business analysis to identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies within the tax department.
- Lead and manage tax-related projects, ensuring timely completion and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define project scope, and develop project plans.
Qualifications
- A professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) is required
- 5+ years of experience in Canadian partnership and mutual fund/unit trust taxation is required
- Completion of Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) in-depth tax courses or a master’s degree in tax is a plus
- Strong understanding of various structures used for Canadian partnership and mutual fund trusts that invest in foreign funds
- Excellent communication, organization, and analytical skills
- Able to work with minimal supervision, exercise judgment, and make decisions while assessing risk and its impact
- Strong people skills, initiative, and leadership abilities with the capability to coach and motivate other professionals
- Adaptable to change with the ability to lead others through change
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, as well as effective listening skills
- Strong client service orientation with the ability to build partnerships and effective working relationships
- Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
