Requirements
- ALAT certification or higher, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences, is required prior to or within eighteen months of the start date.
- At least two years of animal husbandry experience supporting non-human primates in a research setting is required.
- The role requires continuous standing and walking on concrete or hard-surfaced floors, climbing, working in a bent position, and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Greater strength, effort, and agility are required when handling, capturing, and restraining stronger, more active animals.
- Employees must enroll in and meet the Biological Personnel Reliability Program and Select Agent requirements under Army Regulation 190-17.
- Employees must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance if required by the facility or research project.
- A favorably adjudicated Secret security clearance eligibility, without access to classified information, is required.
Responsibilities
- Provide animal care and husbandry during experimental and non-experimental periods in accordance with standard operating procedures and protocols.
- Clean and sanitize animal microenvironments and macroenvironments.
- Transfer animals between cages, restraint devices, and jump boxes.
- Provide environmental enrichment and house animals in appropriately sized and typed cages.
- Monitor animals and report or document abnormal conditions and treatment failures.
- Ensure food and water are available in accordance with standard operating procedures or protocols.
- Work independently and apply practical knowledge and technical expertise to resolve problems independently and cooperatively with other personnel.
- Report standard operating procedure deviations to the Contract Project Manager as soon as practicable.
- Receive, examine, verify the sex of, move, and house incoming laboratory animals in designated rooms in accordance with standard operating procedures and protocols.
- Conduct daily cage counts and weekly head counts and report them to the Contract Project Manager.
- Ensure animals are properly identified and associated with specific experiments.
- Transport animals within the facility and to or from other facilities.
- Ensure proper room designations and entry procedures and update the room entry order.
- Operate animal husbandry equipment and document its operation.
- Store animal husbandry equipment and supplies.
- Observe and document temperature, humidity, and light levels in animal care and use areas and immediately report excursions to the Contract Project Manager.
- Assist with non-routine care, procedure changes, problem resolution, and glassware or cage-wash support tasks.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with rodents, swine, rabbits, and ferrets in a research setting is highly desirable.
- Experience with Good Laboratory Practice is desirable.
