What believers are saying

  • Virtru partnership on July 28, 2026 expands zero-trust file protection for national security.
  • June 2026 Professional Certification broadens partner enablement across APJ and production deployments.
  • Enterprise Advanced launched in 2025, adding AI agents, workflow automation, and hardened controls.

What critics are saying

  • A reported July 2026 layoff cut about 30 employees, roughly 15% of staff.
  • Slack, Microsoft Teams, and ServiceNow remain stronger defaults for enterprise collaboration workflows.
  • If defense budgets slow, Mattermost's specialized vertical bet narrows revenue to mission-critical niches.

What makes Mattermost unique

  • Open-source, self-hosted deployment keeps Mattermost attractive for sovereign and air-gapped buyers.
  • Enterprise Advanced targets multi-domain secure operations with AI, compliance, and quantum-secure messaging.
  • Professional certifications deepen switching costs by training operators across defense and critical infrastructure.

Mattermost and Virtru partner to deliver zero trust data protection for national security operations

Mattermost, an open-source collaboration platform for defence and mission-critical teams, has partnered with Virtru, a data-centric security firm, to deliver Zero Trust Data Format technology for national security operations. The integration enables organisations to apply cryptographic file protection within Mattermost workflows, supporting the Department of War's Zero Trust Strategy and CMMC requirements. When users upload files in Mattermost, they can classify them and apply handling restrictions. Virtru then wraps the file in a ZTDF-protected container, enabling encryption and policy-based access controls that persist as data moves across environments. The architecture aligns with DoD Zero Trust principles and standards recognised by the intelligence community. The integration is available now and will be demonstrated at Black Hat USA and DoDIIS Worldwide Conference in August 2026.
